Former NBA player John Amaechi has come out of the closet.  All over ESPN.com today.  Bully for him!  I just hope fools don't allow it to hinder his charity work with kids' basketball in England.

Outsports has been "teasing" this for a couple weeks. I agree it's terrific, even if he's not exactly a "big name".  Sadly I think the fact that he lives in England will lessen the impact of the story.

There is an article on SFGate.com about him and Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, who knew him in Orlando, basically said "So what?"

Part of the article:

Although teammates may have suspected Amaechi is gay, no one treated him any differently because of it, Rivers said. As for the coach: "It was none of my business."

"It was brought up to me and you look and say, 'So what? Can he rebound? Can he shoot? Can he defend?'" Rivers said before joking about Amaechi's defensive shortcomings. "But with everything else, he was great."

Shaq said if he was on his team he would defend him from outsiders.

I'd be willing to bet a ton of money he isn't the only one retired or active. How many have played in the NBA since it's inception in 1946?? Thousands?? There are probably hundreds who played (or are playing) who are gay.

Saw that in the paper this AM. Sounds to me like Schottenheimer and the bosses didn't see eye-to-eye on things, and since he couldn't fire them...

Too bad the Raiders already hired someone. He'd be a great pickup, if he could deal with Al looking over his shoulder all the time.
Let's get right to it.

My eyes bugged out at that too!  Oh, does that name bring back some fond memories.

Homophobia lives on in sports. This time by former GS Warrior Tim Hardaway:

Loved Amaechi's reply -- yeah, what Hardaway said is ugly but it's probably a more widespread mindset than we'd like to think.  Maybe he can make an appearance at Tony Dungy's fundie fundraiser next month.

Mark Cuban's response is also worth noting, especially because he said it right before Hardaway's remarks & it proved prophetic.

Sadly, I think it is Hardaway who will be seen as an "American hero", "going against the grain" of political correctness, by a large chunk of the NBA's target demographic.

No, I disagree.  It that were true David Stern & Mark Cuban wouldn't be saying what they are saying.  Stern said essentially the league didn't want to have anything further to do with Hardaway and cancelled his invitation to attend the All-Star game in Vegas. And look how quickly Hardaway had to apologize.

I loved John A.'s choice of words describing Timmy H. "It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan & unfathomable."

You know the more I think about it, it's this lack of empathy that keeps screwing up our world.

Good, I'll be glad to have this out in public.  Amaechi had a very smart response to this, and I was likewise impressed with and appreciative of Cuban's comments (which gives me optimism, as if there's one thing Cuban's good at, it's his trendspotting).

Betcha can't guess which way Charles Barkley came out on this topic.
