Yeah, the Cards aren't looking so hot at the moment--they're kinda beat up. If the season had been a week longer, we'd probably be looking at Houston winning the Central. I'd love to see them pull out an upset and beat SD, but they haven't shown much life the last few weeks or so.

Played hookey this afternoon to watch the game, and now that they have their expected lineup back they looked pretty good.  Eckstein & Edmunds staying healthy is key, but if they & Rolen get even a little bit hot, they could do some damage.

Woo Hoo! A's Win Game 1!

Zito gets the win; mah main man Big Hurt hits TWO homers. A big deal in the dreaded Metrodome.

Cards/Pads comin' up at the top of the hour.

ETA: I didn't realize the Padres had home-field advantage. Given the Cards near-collpase recently, that doesn't bode well for the RedBirds.

YAY A's!!! Beating Minnesota in their own yard is huge. Zito needs to keep his confidence up, so getting an 8-inning win is key for him, and nice that Thomas pretty much is driving the team offensively right now.

Finley's baby would have more 'roids in its DNA than Zito's would.

A's re-take the lead! it's 4-2 going into the 8th.

BTW, I was unaware that Barry Z has a blog:

No surprise that it's very well-written.  Gaz should check it out -- there's a comments section, you can tell him about wanting to have his baby...

This was some great reading -- Barry Z's the perfect guy to do a feature like this.  Though it's (hopefully) a long ways off, I look forward to seeing what BZ does with his life after baseball.

Postscript: A's won 5-2.  Amazing -- winning the first 2 in the Thunderdome.  Can't wait for Friday. Woo Hoo!

GO A's!!

I can't figure why none of the pundits gave the A's a chance against the Twins.

I can figure why nobody picked the Cardinals, but they hadn't had their midseason lineup together for something like 40 games until Tuesday.  If they finish off the sweep (and under Tony LaR. they've won 7 straight playoff games against the Padres), they'll have their ace, Carpenter, lined up to pitch game 1 of the NLCS on the road & game 5 at home.   At which point I start liking like my chances.

And the Mets just squeaked by the Bums, 6-5. Nice. So far three of the four teams I'd be rooting for have pulled out wins, one of them twice.
Let's get right to it.

Past history and that damn dome.

BTW didya see former A Eric Byrnes on ESPN as one of their postseason "experts"?  Going for the all-important Spicoli demographic.

Go Cardinals!!!

Albert Pujols goes 3-4, driving in the first run & scoring the second.  Jeff Weaver & 4 relievers combine for a 4-hit shut-out & the 2-game road mini-sweep, just like the A's.  Albert is 5 for 8, with a double and a home run, a slugging percentage of 1.125 and the game-winning RBI in both games.  MVP! MVP!

More importantly, the bullpen has now pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings.  After the Cards found out that Jason "I blew 10 saves this year" Isringhausen was lost for the season in Sept the 'pen sucked.  As you may recall the Cards had a seven-game losing streak, which let the Astro's back into the race. Four of those losses were by only one run, and in each of them the Cards had either a one-run lead or a tie in the 8th inning.

My ideal scenario for an A's Cards WS is shaping up just like I designed it.

Detroit stole one on the road this morning, and hopefully the Dodgers win at least one game somewhere in their series (I at least like their chances in Game 3 with Maddux going against Trachsel).  Then, if the A's & Cards complete their sweeps, each team will have at least one extra day of rest, and, more importantly, they'll have their rotations set for their respective championship series.
