a commercial for the movie of Tommy featuring an hilariously solemn voiceover from Jonathan Schwartz. Followed by EJ's "Pinball Wizard".

"He's scorin' mooooooooooooooore!"

continuing a 1975 set: a clip from MP&THG: "we are the knights who say...  NI!"

I happened to catch some MP on BBC America last nite, an ep that included Dead Parrot.

OK I coulda done without "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the umpteenth time. Thought the "urban" version by the Braids 7 or 8 years ago was genius, tho'.

Monday 8/8: It's 1987
« Reply #319 on: August 08, 2005, 07:17:49 AM »
Should have been 1988 to befit today's date, but ah well.  BOS to Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again," the only synth riff that could ever be described as "crushing."

Woo Hoo! Joan Jett, "Light of Day"!  Been a while since I've heard this. Has Dave ever used this in an '88 set?

Tuesday, August 9: Tribute to Jerry

It's an all-Dead set, in memory of Mr. Garcia.  I wish I enjoyed their work more.

Well, as the song goes, "One man gathers what another man spills!"

Eyes of the World
« Reply #323 on: August 09, 2005, 07:44:06 AM »
always sweet to hear this on the radio.  This is the song that we thought sounded like Archie Bell and the Drells the first time we heard it.

Eyes Of The World
(Robert Hunter)

Right outside this lazy summer home
You don't have time to call your soul a critic, no
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home
Wondering where the nuthatch winters
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own

There comes a redeemer and he slowly, too, fades away
And there follows a wagon behind him that's loaded with clay
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay
And the night comes so quiet and it's close on the heels of the day.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has it's beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of it's own

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home
Sometimes we ride on your horses Sometimes we walk alone
Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has it's beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of it's own
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

Uncle John's Band
« Reply #324 on: August 09, 2005, 07:47:26 AM »
the Deadheads raised some money to buy a billboard to fight a Colorado anti-gay initiative, using the line from this song:

"Ain't no time to hate"

Uncle John's Band
(Garcia/Hunter)

Well the first days are the hardest days,
Don't you worry any more,
'Cause when life looks like Easy Street,
There is danger at your door.
Think this through with me,
Let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Is are you kind?

It's a buck dancer's choice my friend;
Better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now
And the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me?
Won't you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare,
Have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs,
Their motto is "Don't tread on me".
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.

It's the same story the crow told me;
It's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come
And like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate,
Barely time to wait,
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Where does the time go?
I live in a silver mine
And I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin
And I beg you call the tune,
Anybody's choice,
I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
How does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about,
Here beside the rising tide.

Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.

Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

I thought the intro reminded me of Marvin Gaye, circa What's Goin' On.

1979 this morning: today's gem-that-Dave-has-never-played was Patti Smith's fab cover of "So You Wanna Be a Rock'n'Roll Star".
