Friday: It's 1983
« Reply #345 on: August 26, 2005, 07:03:31 AM »
"The year the Chicken McNugget was introduced," we are helpfully reminded (and I can't imagine a McDonald's without them now).  Kicking things off with "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," which sounds better on Fridays than on other days (it's a scientific fact!).

Friday 8/26: 1983. Starting in Moreyesque fashion with Human League, "(Keep Feeling) Fascination".

(Human JINX)

I don't think I ever noticed the degree to which Laura Branigan took her vocal cues from Donna Summer.  Not quite the degree that France Joli did, but still ...

Ooh!  "Undercover"!

Really?  I remember the first time I heard "Gloria" on the radio; I just assumed it was Ms Summer.  My roommate at the time -- a straight guy -- liked the song so much he bought an import 12-inch of the original Italian version (by... Umberto Tozzi? something like that).

off-topic, but amusing: the Critical Quote of the Day by Manhola Dargis, reviewing Brothers Grimm in the NYTimes...

"Like Colin Farrell in Alexander, Mr. Damon is also forced to struggle with a most disenchanting handicap, namely a hairdo (or wig) that in combination with his sideburns and frock coat make him look ready for a Paul Revere and the Raiders tribute band..."

And there was much celebrating in the streets of New York as the mighty JoBoxers win BOS O' The Week for "Just Got Lucky."  Glory!

Are there any other songs where the piano bass notes dictate the melody?

BOS JoBoxers, "Just Got Lucky" -- TANC, it's been in my head since seeing 40 Year-Old Virgin last nite.  Hilarious movie and great soundtrack.

"You framed an ASIA poster?!?"

You gotta see it, Gaz, especially for the musical number at the end.

Concluding with another Morey fave, SRV. In all, a pleasant set... and '69 is on tap at the top o' the hour!

BTW Rob, we invaded Gren-AY-da, not Gren-AH-da.

OMG, the musical number at the end* KILLS!!!.  I won't say what it is to avoid spoiling the surprise, but it's worth the price of admission all by itself.

BTW since you loved 40YOV so much, you really should see Wedding Crashers.

Mon 8/29/05: it's 1976. The stream's sounding crappy, but Ms Armatrading ("Love & Affection") and the Flamin' Groovies ("Shake Some Action") make it worthwhile.

ETA: OMG! Linda Ronstadt with Karla Bonoff's lovely "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me".

Fri 9/2/05: a decidedly dull 1992 set suddenly comes alive with "Divine Thing"!
