in other news, the Giants magic number is ... 1!  Woo Hoo!

looks like it may remain 1 for another day: Padres up 5-0 in the 4th.

Indeed, 1 is still the magic-est number that you'll ever do. But at least the guys got a rally going in the 6th to make it interesting. Thank god for MLB network. And tomorrow's game is the Fox game o' the week.
getting close!  Giants up 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th!

Kuip just interviewed Pat "Mr Dreamy" Burrell in the clubhouse, followed by Kruk talking to Zito  -- wish Gaz could see it.  Glad they finally did it.

Doc does it again

History made in Oaktown today: pitcher Dallas Braden faces the minimum 27 batters and pitches the 19th perfect game in major league history, and the first for the A's since Catfish Hunter did it 42 years ago.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/05/09/SPA11DBV1F.DTL&type=sports&tsp=1

Total attendance: 12,228, about twice as many as saw Catfish's gem.

And less than three weeks later, Roy Halladay does it again, becoming the 20th pitcher to throw a perfect game. First time there have ever been two perfect games in one season, not to mention three within a year's time (Mark Buerle did it for the White Sox last June.)

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5234017

Doc Halladay just cemented his place in baseball lore. He tossed a no-no at the Reds today in the first game of the NLCS. This is on top of his perfecto back in May. Only the fifth pitcher ever to throw two in one season, and the first since Nolan Ryan did it in '73. Also only the second no-hitter in post-season play, after Don Larsen's storied perfect game for the Yankees in '56.

I'm not going to wade through the comments to see if anyone else brought this up, but this eerily reminder me of NFL player Dimitrius Underwood's collision of sports, mental illness, and God: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimitrius_Underwood

Great quote from one of AL's FB friends, after last nite's game:

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if thousands of floppy, flaccid, foam tomahawk wielding Atlantans cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

So I saw the headline on this story -- "Bay Area Sports Beard Hall of Fame" -- and figured it was about women who've dated Shawn Estes and Jeff Garcia. Silly me.

Had I known the Giants would be playing last nite, I would've bought tix to a different Sharks game.  But I was walking to the Tank after dinner and was passing near a couple of sports-bar type places just as they pushed the score to 4-1. You could've heard the cheers in Monterey, probably.

Why people watch FOX Sports with the sound down, part XXXVIII: Tim McCarver, talking about Edgar Renteria just now, said he was beloved in "Colombia, the country from which he reigns". Er, "reigns"? I mean, he's popular but he's not King or anything. Sheesh.
