Especially for Gaz: the new box set of obscure girl-group gems, One Kiss Can Lead to Another

That title sounds like it could have some relevance to another recent thread--I'll let you figure out which. ;)

speaking (as we were recently) about unnecessary remakes: I just heard, on the Drive's new Xmas channel (thanks Gaz for the tip), Brian Wilson remaking his own "Little St Nick", from his new Xmas CD.  Yawn.

The Request-O-Rama question this morning involved the Cars, who are "re-forming" (actually only one orig member is involved) with a "well-known" artist as frontman.  You had to guess who that was. A number of folks guessed Gary Numan (which woulda been my guess too, it seemed to be where Dave was directing us with comments like "think about it -- it's the Cars"). But no.

The "New Cars" are being fronted by... Todd Rungren!  WTF!?!

If you've ever thought: "Y'know, I'd love to hear Paul Anka cover songs by Nirvana, The Pet Shop Boys & Billy Idol"- then I've got the album for you!

Paul Anka's got a new album called "Rock Swings" which pretty much tells you what you need to know right there. You can find a few mp3s at this here blog:

http://babyborderline.blogspot.com/

(click on the song you want- that will take you to a 3rd party hosting site where you'll be able to download the mp3....)

a very cool version. They also do Cimarron's '70s cheeze-country-pop hit "Rings" on that album.

Is the Kottke thing new?  I've heard it twice now, and I have to admit, I hate it.

So does he keep James Taylor on the stereo, or does he update the ref?

y'know, I think he changes it, but I'm blanking on who he mentions. There was a country version some years back that references Merle Haggard, iirc.

Pino Paladino

I don't remember if this has been mentioned already, but the latest news on 10@10's favorite bassist, Pino Palladino, is that he's playing in the John Mayer Trio blues outfit.  Xgau's take on them:

Whatever you make of his music, John's one of the people you've just gotta root for.

John Mayer Trio opening for Phil Lesh's gigs in SF at the end of the month. I'm still crossing my fingers I get mailed tickets from the mail in lottery.
Urth or Geoff, you have any pull for tix at the Fillmore or Warfield for Phil's shows?

OK, I have yet to hear the Black-Eyed Peas' "My Humps" -- but this writer for Slate says it's, like, The. Worst. Song. EVAH!

Very comparable to Kelis's "Milkshake."  A fluff throwaway but so well produced and gratingly earwormy that it becomes a guilty pleasure.
