New Music Thurs with Benson: KFOG finally plays The Little Willies.

Followed by the new Pearl Jam, "Worldwide Suicide". Now there's a jaunty little song title.

That was Pearl Jam? I missed the intro, and couldn't stick around the house long enough for the back-sell, so I just heard a bit of the song itself. It rather rawked.

Btw, I've heard several references to "KFOG Music director Kelly somethingorother" in various promos and such over the last week, so I guess they finally found a replacement for Haley Jones MD. Hope she's as hot as Haley was. ;)
Let's get right to it.

BTW, much dissention in the studio about the Pearl jam -- Renee LOVED it, Greg thought it was noise.

I think it's a pre-requisite for female MDs: must be hot.  I hear she originally applied to be the new "Bone Rock Girl"

Annalisa told me way back that Kelly had taken that job (not that I personally know her or anyhting) and it was an internal transfer from somewhere else in the KFOG offices.  She was formerly director of promotions, iirc.

What with no Drive today I also heard the Pearl Jam, and I'm with Renee on this.  She said something to the effect that Stone Gossard got his balls back.

This is a very clever analogy:

It's an ingenious variation on the archetypal Jewish blackface routine, immortalized in The Jazz Singer (1927), when the immigrant striver Jolson put on blackface to cast off his Jewish patrimony and become American. In 2006, Matisyahu wears Old World "Jewface," and in so doing, becomes "black."

FWIW, the Matisyahu song "King Without a Crown" very nearly made my Top 10 Singles of 2005 -- I went with KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" instead, and now I'm wishing I'd held both over for this year, since they're both just now accumulating U.S. radio airplay.

Other top singles of 2006 so far include:
Rihanna, "S.O.S. (Rescue Me)"
Sean Paul, "Temperature"
Mary J. Blige, "Be Without You"
Mary J. Blige and U2, "One"
The Animators, "Buy Buy"

and I'm very anxious to hear the new Rosanne Cash.

I've been really intrigued by him, and just did some groovin on "King Without a Crown" off my daughter's iPod yesterday.  Gotta support the onetime Deadhead, brings out my Jewish roots with some righteous piety!

From my viewpoint, he looks a bit too much like Ali G doing an elaborate, "ironic" character.

I wasn't aware that Billy Idol had new material out, but I just heard his new song "Scream" on The Bone.  It sounds like 4 or 5 of his "classics" thrown into a blender. Interestingly, KFOG isn't playing it, even tho' they play "White Wedding" dozens of times a week.

And while looking at the New Releases page on the KFOG website to see if the Billy Idol song was mentioned, I see that they list that Matisyahu song, "King Without a Crown", tho' I have never heard them actually play it on the radio. Has anyone?

I have heard it on Live 105, and it was all over the radio in Seattle 3 months ago when I was there.  Musta heard it 5 times in 2 days.

Got some killer guitar work on it, too.

Listening to Bonnie Simmons' wonderful Thursday nite show on KPFA, and she's gushing about what a wonderful time she had at SXSW this year. Her 2 favorite band names:

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness

-and-

Euripides Pants

meanwhile, a good friend of mine in NY, a guy named Mark Rosenblatt, emailed me to say:

"I've gotten in touch with my Lubavitcher roots and now prefer to be called
Matisblatto".

I haven't heard it myself, but apparently a group called Islands has done a song called "Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby."  If that's a Sly nod then I am deliriously happy.

The new Franz Ferdinand video is for a song called "L. Wells" that isn't on their latest, You Could Have It So Much Better.  Song's good if not great -- but the video is the freshness: http://www.dominorecordco.com/site/downloads/Franz_L.Wellsvideo/ff_l_wells_HIGH.wvx
