Oh. My. GOD.  This Willie Nelson thing is f--ing brilliant.  Here's hoping it ends up in regular KFOG rotation (tho' considering Fogheads' aversion to country music, that's a longshot, probably).  But major, major props to Mr Benson for giving it a spin.

A guy named Ned Sublett is the songwriter.

And KFOG is doing a major "salute to New Orleans" starting Fri afternoon and leading up to Tuesday (Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday).

Heard Willie tune this morning about 8. Amazed me that he wrote it a while back. 20 years or so? I've always liked Willie. Only time I've seen him live was at a Bridge Benefit.

I worked a few Willie shows at the Fillmore over the years, and the one thing that always hit me was the incredible number of songs of his you know--well. His catalog is really really deep, and he just reels 'em off, one after another. Hope he's still got his publishing....
Let's get right to it.

Yee Haw!

Willie's "gay cowboy" song was recorded by Pansy Division in 1995!  Here's a link to their version:

http://bomarr.carsandtrains.net/pansydivision-cowboys.mp3

They speed it up a bit and include verses that Willie leaves out.

and now it's new Elvis Costello, with a crooner album doing a jazzy remake of "Watching the Detectives" that sounds like it belongs in West Side Story.

ETA: and Fogheads mostly HATED it.  And it's a bit, shall we say, overblown?

yeah, glad they're playing it -- I'd been hearing it on that Austin station (KGSR) the last couple weeks.  Catchy as hell.

Yacht Rock: The Next Generation!

Kenny Loggins' son, Crosby Loggins (named after Bing, not David, BTW) is performing live on KPIG as we speak. He sounds like his father in much the same way that James Taylor's kid sounds like dad.

Southside Johnny has a new album -- Little Steven played a cut Sun nite, a not-bad cover of the Stones' "Happy".

Anybody else read this Joel Selvin piece in the Chron about Jamie Cullum?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/07/DDG8CHIA7V1.DTL

I'm glad Joel likes Jamie, but doesn't Cullum get quite a bit of airplay? (KFOG certainly gave him a big push last year). Selvin makes it sound like Cullum is going ignored.

KFOG is not the world -- in other words, the Adult Top 40 chart has minimal relevant relation to the Hot 100 -- and this is Joel's way of taking a stance that can hardly be assailed but more importantly cannot be corrected so as to test the hypothesis.  One of the better critic's techniques.  He can tout him endlessly and never be proven wrong.

Either that, or the music's damn good, which it is.
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”
