Not new to the world, but apparently new to the Virgin Megastore and certainly new to me, and now mine for a bargain $10:

http://gb.v2music.com/site/product.asp?ID=945

The following are must-haves in anyone's collection:

The Beautiful South, "Everybody's Talkin'"
Michael Andrews f/ Gary Jules, "Mad World"
Everything But the Girl, "I Don't Want to Talk About It"
Toploader, "Dancing in the Moonlight"
Lulu, "The Man Who Sold the World"
Kirsty MacColl, "A New England"
Stereophonics, "Handbags and Gladrags"

The latter, faithful to Rod's and elegantly performed, is perfect music for drinking solo on a Friday night.
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

How come they don't have Nilsson's version as the cover?

It's a British comp, and I think the BS are/were far more popular there; further, with any compilation like this, you're going to have your fair share of licensing challenges.  But for 38 songs, to get 40% phenoms is to more than get my money's worth.

PS: Who's that with Joni?  I'm sorry I don't recognize him.

Fred Neil, the author, and original artist for "Everybody's Talkin'" I doubt anyone would recognize him.  This is the classic pic:

and meanwhile, your getting-a-boner avatar is... ?

(Hate to disappoint her, but Anderson is way gay.  Hanging with Mr Cooper, indeed.)

I ganked it from Gawker.com, a NYC gossip website that has an obsession with Da Coop and I think did that pic as a mock-up for the shirt.  Something like that.

Also, not that anyone asked, but I found myself moderately enjoying the Aqualung song "Left Behind" and majorly digging (whoa!) that new Wallflowers song, "The Beautiful Side of Somewhere."

Fred Neil wrote so many classics, he's kind of the folk-rock equivalent to Willie Dixon in the blues-rock world.  Other songs covered during that era:  The Other Side of This Life, That's the Bag I'm In, I've Got a Secret,  Bleeker and MacDougal.

I mentioned the Aqualung tune yesterday, pointing out that it's the best U2 imitation I've heard in ages (unlike their previous tune, which was yet another Coldplay clone).

The Wallflowers tune is actually over a year old. I mondegreened it for months as "beautiful sad somewhere".

Sergio Mendes returns, directly in the mold of Santana and Herbie Hancock; i.e., "let's get a bunch of contempo stars and cast the guy in an elder statesman role and give him the comeback he deserves/wants."  He's signed to the new label of Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, whose indelible stamp is on what I've heard so far.

Leo Sayer makes a comeback, via a 2006 remix of his 1977 "Thunder in My Heart", which is tipped to be a UK #1 this week or next. Still looks like Richard Simmons, tho'.

Another new-to-me-but-not-the-world acquisition, this one a reclaiming of a Voice discard: Toploader's 2000 album Onka's Big Moka.  They're the ones who did the fab cover of "Dancing in the Moonlight" that I was just talking about recently.  The rest of their CD is quite nice: imagine a hybrid of Starsailor and Black Crowes.  I'm quite taken with it.  Definitely recommend looking for it Amoeba should you have the time.

And speaking of having time for Amoeba: I think I want to make a trip there when I'm in town.  In fact, I think I'm gonna start a separate thread for that . . .

Released today as an iTunes download exclusive: Willie Nelson's rendition of "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly (Fond of Each Other)," a song written in 1981 by rock historian/writer Ned Sublette (an absolute genius, a Nawlins guy with a love for Cuba and its music who is the epitome of the southern gentleman), and recorded by Pansy Division at some point.

I mwah Willie a thousand times for doing this.  And I hope word of mouth somehow manages to send this onto the Hot 100!

according to defamer.com, the song was played on Howard Stern's show yesterday. And on a related front, here's "The Gayest Marquee in America":
