Have any of you been watching the World Cup action?  it's been pretty great, esp today w the USA late goal allowing them to advance to the next round.

Action?

Seriously, I HAVE TRIED.  Really I have.  Can't get into it.  Though I do root for the US from afar, much like I do for the Giants.  But really, if I find watching baseball to be generally dull and uninteresting, what chance do I have of finding soccer interesting?

Go Raiders!  (At least you tried!  :) )

A lot of folks think soccer is boring, not to mention the horrible fake diving that also turns people off.  I don't "follow" it unless it's the World Cup, I get into the nationalized drama of it all.  Like the French team imploding, the Italians -- the defending champs, a team which features some players known for diving, I'm talking to you Di Rossi! -- getting sent home early.  If you were watching the USA game yesterday and were aware of the situation re: the English, the points needed to advance, you were treated to some great drama -- and that is the best part of sports for me.

Gaz might be interested tp hear that A's pitcher Trevor Cahill uses as his warm-up music... JA's "White Rabbit".  Maybe his grandparents turned him on to it?

and speaking of "retro"... it's '70s Turn Back The Clock Night at the A's game -- A's & Pirates wearing thier vintage '70s unis -- let's boogie!

and the TV broadcast is '70s-retro too: no score/balls/outs ribbon across the top of the screen and the announcers are wearing yellow sports jackets -- very Howard Cosell.

holy crap: Giants trade Bengie:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/giants/detail?&entry_id=66922

two words: Buster Posey

Bengie calls a good game, he's good guy, but he hits into DPs like crazy*.  And he's old.

Here's his stats for this year
Year    Team    G    AB    R    H    2B    3B    HR    RBI    BB    K    SB    CS    AVG    OBP    SLG
2010    SF    61    202    17    52    6    0    3    17    14    19    0    0    .257    .312    .332

kinda ho-hum

* oh, but wait!   guess who leads the NL in GIDP?  The Panda, by far:  http://stats.sfgate.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=201
Bengie's not even on the list this year.  My bad.

I'd never heard of "Purple Drank" until today. I'm either very old or very lucky ... or both. But JaMarcus Russell knows all about it:

no wonder he's so slow.
are you saying that if you DID know of it, you'd be a likely candidate to try it?  But everyone knows about codeine, right?  That's a classic.

Didn't know but probably can't make it. I'll be in Denver that week and miss Jerry Day. Flying from Denver to Reno on the 7th for a wedding in Tahoe and back here on the 8th. I'm gonna be pooped.

Warriors sold for $450 million, but not to Larry Ellison. New ownership group is led by Peninsula venture capitalist Joe Lacob and Mandalay Entertainment CEO Peter Guber.
