This guy is having a contest on his blog... letting people vote for Most. Annoying. ESPN. Personality.  Steven A Smith has just gotta win, no?

You would think.  I see they're giving him his own show, "Quite Frankly."  What a lame catch phrase...

There used to be a guy on Fox Sports that just drove me nuts--Van Something Something-or-other (I keep wanting to say Van Gordon Sauter, but that's not it). Very full of himself. What an ass. (But then again, I think that's in the job description.)
Let's get right to it.

I know the guy you mean, Van Earl Wright.  I actually kinda liked him, but with knowledge aforehand that he would annoy many.  He seems to be on a gradual downward spiral:

Van Earl Wright joined Fox Sports Radio as the L.A. based morning host in October 2004. Wright has spent the last eight years at Fox Sports Net in Los Angeles, first as anchor for "Fox Sports News" and the "National Sports Report", and currently anchors "The Southern California Sports Report."

National TV Sports -> Regional TV SPorts -> La Radio Sports

Here's a great tidbit from the Elias Sports Bureau:

• Greg Maddux recorded his 3,000th career strikeout on Tuesday night when he got Omar Vizquel looking in the third inning. Maddux struck out a career-high 204 batters in 1998, and that was his only 200-SO season. Every other pitcher with 3,000 career strikeouts had at least three 200-SO seasons; most had many more: Nolan Ryan, 15 (5,714 career SO); Roger Clemens, 12 (4,440); Randy Johnson, 12 (4,292); Tom Seaver, 10 (3,640); Bob Gibson, 9 (3,117); Steve Carlton, 8 (4,136); Bert Blyleven, 8 (3,701); Gaylord Perry, 8 (3,534); Walter Johnson, 7 (3,511); Ferguson Jenkins, 6 (3,192); Don Sutton, 5 (3,574); Phil Niekro, 3 (3,342).

ETA, so of the 12 other pitchers to reach 3,000 SO's, only Phil Niekro failed to have at least 5 times as many 200 SO seasons as Maddux.  Not sure what that means, but it is interesting.

It means Niekro pitched until he was 67 and Maddux got to pitch to people like Sammy Sosa and Jose Hernandez plenty of times over 19 years.

I think you got that inverted.  If pitching to Sammy & Jose counts for anything it should help you reach the season totals more than the career totals.  Seems Maddux was remarkably consistent about strinking out 150-180 batters per year without much deviation.

Hey how about some props for my Cardinals?

Through 101 games they are 64-37, by far the best record in the NL & have had a double digit divisional lead for over a month now.  And this despite the fact that only Pujols has appeared in every game.  The remaining seven of the opening day starting 8 have missed a combined total of 157 games and counting, with Rolen, Sanders, Walker & Molina each on the DL for a couple more weeks at least.  At this point So Taguchi & Abraham Nunez have both appeared in more games than any of those 4, and John Mabry will pass them up in about another week.  Does that lineup strike fear into anyone's heart?  Pujols is of course doing his annual Barry Bonds impression (minus the attitiude) & Nunez is surprisingly hitting .308, but nobody else is hitting above .284.  And yet they have scored the second most runs in the NL.

Anyone still think Tony LaRussa is over-rated?

Well, props and all to your Cardinals, but jeez, considering the Giants' year, do you have to rub it in?

Fully acknowledged and congratulated.  Quick Q: Is Scott Seabol going to be called back up?  I went to high school with him (he graduated two years after me) and was pleased when he finally made the big time.

Giants trade Torrealba and Foppert to Seattle:

and in other news, Eric Byrnes' stay in Colorado was short -- he's now an Oriole. I was hoping to see him in person(I'm going to the Giants/Rockies game Wed nite) but I'll have to settle for Sun Nite Baseball tomorrow.

I saw him in his last game with the Rockies, vs. the Phillies: he looked *miserable*.  Was fooled in each of his at-bats, rather embarrassingly.

Hope B-More's a better change of scenery.  At least he'll be close to Dupont Circle.   8)

well, he's looking good tonite -- hit his first HR as an Oriole on Sun Nite Baseball. And (bonus!) the unbearable Joe Morgan has the nite off.

Speaking of Orioles: Rafael Palmeiro's been suspended for steroid use.  He denies all charges, but we'll see how this plays out.  If he's going down, he's not going down alone, I'll promise you that much.

I'm assuming this was you, Gaz.

This got mentioned in the 10@10 thread -- we did our obligatory Viagra jokes there.
