Bush and Palmiero
« Reply #45 on: August 03, 2005, 11:46:16 PM »
I missed last night's Daily Show, so am watching the replay, and once again, get the real news from the fake news show that the real news shows don't show.  (at this point, I feel like the Aflac duck in the Yogi Berra commercial)

From Slate, where Bush is talking about Palmiero:
Quote
"He's the kind of person that's going to stand up in front of the klieg lights and say he didn't use steroids, and I believe him. Still do." Even though Bush hasn't been a baseball owner in more than a decade, he hasn't forgotten how to look the other way. Somehow he still finds time to practice.

Bush has "klieg lights" in his vocabulary?!

Remember, he was a failure as a ballclub owner as well.

And Gaz -- the mixer was sponsored by Energy 92.7, and "Greg the Gay Sportscaster" was there. He's WAY gay. Apparently his catchphrase is "If it involves playing with balls -- I'm ALL OVER IT!" Yeesh.

That comes from Dilbert, right?  Did you see yesterday's strip? One of the funniest in a long time (imho).

Yes, it's actually an official legal link, unlike so many others!  I actually subscribe to get Dilbert in my email box every day.  I also noticed that they are starting to run classic Bloom County strips too.  Here's a taste:

Yeah but they've lost 8 in a row & 16 of 20 since the all-Star break. Now they're 51-56, in 4th place, 4 games back of Toronto, after being 41-27 & in 1st place on June 19th, 3 games up on Boston.  That's a pretty colossal collapse.

So I watched the A's beat up on the poor KC Royals... 16-1. Now, 16 runs in one game is the Oakland franchise record -- and they've done it twice in less than 2 months. They did it to the Giants, and then a week or 2 later they came close to doing it to someone else (I'm blanking on who, I think they scored 15 that nite) and now again. Amazing.

Following the A's game, FSN is showing PCL action: The Sac'to River Cats vs the Albequerque... ISOTOPES?  I can't believe there's really a team with that name! Did they steal it from The Simpsons?

No truth to the rumor that's he's a close personal friend of Larry Krueger...

Apologies in advance to you Giants fans, but you get Carpenter, Morris & Suppan this weekend, who have 41 wins between them & it says here by Monday they'll have 44.

Go Cards!

p.s. Clemens got rocked a bit last night, so I think ERA notwithstanding, it's Carpenter's Cy Young to lose at this point.  Hard to feel too sorry for Roger, being with a divisonal rival & all, but how do you not already have 20 wins with a 1.53 ERA?  The Astros have lost SEVEN games in which he has pitched at least 7 innings and given up 1 or 0 earned runs, and another when he only gave up 2.  This includes 3 consecutive starts in April when he took shutouts through 7 & the Astros lost 1-0 each time.

I would feel bad for him EXCEPT that this season seems to be his karmic comeuppance for his season with the Yanks when he went 19-2 or 21-2 or something ridiculous like that, but had absurd run support and was spared losses at least 4 or 5 times b/c the hitters came back against the opposing pitching after he left the game.

(One also wonders if there's a difference sort of karmic comeuppance at work, not that I'm accusing him directly of being one of the 'roiders ...)

P.S.  Who for the AL Cy?  I'm sticking with the longshot Zito, but I don't think it's anyone's to win or lose at this point.

I for one cannot stand the obnoxious prick and totally enjoy seeing him get rocked, karma or not .  I'd LOVE to see him get caught juicing. Or better yet the sactimonious Mr Schilling, who sat next to Palmiero at the Congressional hearings.  (At least Raffy doesn't claim to get all his strength from Jesus.)
