I love the writers at SFWeekly's "SF Foodie" blog, but they've outdone themselves here:

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2011/06/best_chain_restaurants.php

LMAO!!!!!  Best article ever!  ;D

Especially love this line: "We know, we know, you love the stewed tripe and stinky tofu at that one hidden gem in the Outer Richmond."  HA.  I wish tripe (& other parts) wouldn't have earned people culinary street cred, though, because it's made the price go way up.  >:(

Only thing that they don't get right is Ajisen Ramen.  It doesn't have enough of a presence here to put it in the same category as PF Chang's, etc, & they only wrote a small not-terribly-entertaining paragraph at that.  Yoshinoya "Beef Bowl" is corny & would have been much better...or even Red Lobster.  They could have written a paragraph about the cheddar bay biscuits! :)

That is genius, and of course TOTALLY nails how I feel about Train. SFWeekly's bloggers are my kinda snarky.

Trader Joes coming to Nob Hill (the old Cala store):

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/bottomline/detail?entry_id=91886&tsp=1

I was hoping they'd take over the Cala on S. Van Ness but Fresh'n'Easy (or whatever they're called) grabbed that space. A TJ's down the street from the Lumiere will be a good thing.

Kinda makes me sad.  I grew up across the street from that Cala on California St.  My mom still lives there, actually.  I used to fetch a pack of Kents for her from the vending machine there when I was 9.  I also got caught nicking a box of Cherry Pop Tarts there when I was a kid.  ::)  Er...so many memories for me!  But, still...Trader Joe's gets a hell yeah!

I can't tell if the building will be torn down or not.. I certainly hope not.  I love it.   It's very Googy.  it's also featured in a scene in Petula.

It can easily be preserved and TJ-ified as-is, so I'm guessing that's what they'll do. There was talk that when Cala closed it *would* be torn down and a big ol' luxury high-rise would go up on that corner, so I guess this is the best that could've been hoped for... unless they build on TOP of TJ's.

Bissap Baobab, the Ethiopian restaurant on Mission near 19th that's been there for about a decade, has moved to new digs around the corner. In its place is a new bar/club called... wait for it... "Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem"!  So, do they show old Muppet Shows 24/7?  Must investigate.

In other Mission food news, a new BBQ joint called Baby Blues just opened (Mission @ Precita) -- apparently a branch of a SoCal place.

Anyone else go to the SF Street Food Festival?

It was totally packed, and a lot of fun.

Don't stand in the way of LOVE!
