The Food Thread

for the princess especially: the Streep as Julia Child (coming this summer)!

I'm curious--in what film does she play Julia? Never thought about it, but JC would make an interesting biopic subject, since before becoming a food icon, she was a counterintelligence operative during WWII. Really.

I just want to see her weeping tears of joy at Tu Lan at 6th and Mission.

Are they still there? That place milked Julia's recco for all it was worth, even though it was pretty filthy the last couple times I was in there. Loved their imperial rolls and pan fried noodles though. Lots of Warfield staff ate their regularly, since they're right across the street. Also Cancun, for the same reason.

I ate there when I visited in December.  The place is a hole, as is the whole block, but it's really got the best bun cha I've had in my life.  I try to stop by every time I'm in town.

we've gotta get you to Shanghai Dumpling King next trip.

The one out on Balboa, a few blocks from the Balboa theater, yes? Also a great place.

I ate there last nite, in fact -- "I Love You man" was playing at the Balboa, so it was all the excuse I needed to pig out.

Goodness, do I hope I can make it back to SF again this year.  Having a wanderlust moment at work.

Mama, I'm coming home! In October, that is. I don't think I've ever been to either of those restaurants, but I'm missing dim sumpin' fierce right about now.

I lunched at Yank Sing today.  Would love to try the dim sum mentioned here...

If you like good cheap dim sum, try Good Luck on Clement St. near 9th Ave (across from Walgreens) in San Francisco. Prices are very cheap (some are like 3 pieces for $1.50 or something like that).

way back when the interwebs were new I found this online calorie counter thing:

There might be other tools out there, but I'm too lazy to find them. 

If you look up 'burrito' you'll find just fast food versions of burritos, but you can piece together a California burrito if you look up each indiv item separately and compile a list:
(tortilla > flour > 1 serving of 3 oz> "save" -- beans > pinto > cooked > 1 serving of 1 cup "save", etc...). 

then you "analyze" your assembled items. In my case it's my quick version of a chicken burrito, note I chose some brand name ingredients (Taco Bell Salsa, eg) as closest approximations of what I would probably eat.

I'm pretty sure Yank Sing serves Shanghai Dumplings, but they probably charge 3 or 4 bucks for 4 of them, whereas Dumpling King gives you 10 (!) for $5.25 -- yum!

I ate at Farmer Brown's once last year before going to a Warfield show. (They're trying to make down home cooking haute cuisine.) Was not too impressed. $15 for a "large" bowl of gumbo that was neither substantial nor terribly spicy. Also, the place was jammed with hipsters and noisy as hell (I think the Chron gave them a "bomb" rating for noise in their review), but I imagine that was the crowd they were going for. Thumbs down here.
