KFOG did this M3S for the Pop Quiz today:

Pretenders, "Back on the Chain Gang"

I'm pretty sure I got it, but I had to cheat on the Pretenders tune to confirm my guess, so I'll hold off in case anyone else can get it without looking.

They were pretty tough today -- you had to actually come up with the references in the songs...

Which is what a really GOOD M3S is all about -- back in the day, when Dave & Co. did M3S every day, it was usually as hard as this one or harder.  But apparently they got complaints about how their contests are geared towards "smart people" and therefore unfair to dummies.  (Live 105 used to get similar complaints about the Alex Bennett show -- "they always do smart jokes that I don't get")

Well, from a standpoint of not wanting to alienate a percentage of your listeners, it's probably a good idea not to make the contests too hard, or people start feeling inferior and tuning away to a station that caters to the dummies. Kinda like those stupid "trivia" questions that they run amidst the Coke ads before the previews at the movies.

indeed, those trivia questions -- when theaters first started running those pre-show slide-shows back in the '80s -- used to be fairly hard too. They were actually about old movies (the idea being, if you were in a movie theater, you were probably a movie fan). Then some genius at Coke realized they could tie the questions in with current films (and get studios to maybe, er, cough up a gratuity for having their films mentioned). *sigh*

Well my thinking is that all three refer to a newspaper, "...working for the Daily Mail", "...the New York Times said 'God Is Dead'", "...and the News Of The World". 

And for the record, this is exactly the kind of M3S that I love.  Kudos to them for this one.

Yeah, this was a good one for sure.    nice job.  

I called and got through before song #3, but my guess was Joe Jackson's "Sunday Papers" -- a weak choice knowing that they played it just the other morning in re: The Chronicle.

After the tix slipped through my hands on Tuesday's nine o'clock pop quiz, I've been kicking myself since then and trying hard to win them.

Davis is best known these days as Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter series, but he was also the titular character in all four (egregiously bad) Leprechaun movies.  The first of which I saw in Taiwan in 1993, and it featured the film debut of one Jennifer Aniston.
