Jacksons, "Blame it on the Boogie"
Diesel, "Sausalito Summernight"
Sister Sledge, "He's the Greatest Dancer"
-
A second one:
1. Seals & Crofts, "I'll Play for You"
2. Elton John, "Bennie & the Jets"
3. Rick Dees, "Disco Duck"

I guess you're either thinking "applause" or "fake applause", tho' I believe the EJ was actually recorded with a live audience at some arena or other.

That is what I was going for. I need to look into the EJ story more; he was a topic of discussion at EMP this year (B&TJ's going to #15 on the R&B charts that year), and the presenter strongly implied that the crowd noise had been an invention of Gus Dudgeon (the idea being to make fun of British audiences' propensity to annoyingly clap on the on beat instead of the off).

I'll be interested to see what you find out; I'd always assumed it was fake crowd noise on B&TJ, but either Rob or Bob played it recently and said "... recorded live at _______", which surprised me.
When Gus D. got stoned, was he in high Dudgeon?

OK, let's just substitute the played-this-week Paul Humphries "Cool Aid," then.

Pretenders "My Baby" also qualifies.

Here's another pretty easy one I think, since we just heard the Stones tune in Bob's 1968 set:
Nashville Teens "Tobacco Road"
Lenny Kraviz "Are You Gonna Go My Way?"
Stones "Jumpin' Jack Flash"

You got it! I was looking for 'start with'.
In fact I think Lenny's "I was born" is sung perfectly identically to Mick's.

All 3 bands involve brothers.

Argh! The selection of "Some Might Say" rather than one of Oasis' well-known songs had me looking for a lyrical connection.

I'm not sure how easy this one is, but I think it is a good one:
Smashmouth "Walking On The Sun"
Crosby, Stills & Nash "Just A Song Before I Go"
The Doors "Touch Me"

nope. it is in the lyrics though.

No one bit yet, so here's a hint: The link is that these songs could justifiably be mentioned in another thread in the Stream of Consciousness forum.

I guess this one wasn't so easy after all...all three contain references to taglines from commercials.
The opening line of "Walking on the Sun" is 'It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke & teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.'
CSN contains the line '...into the friendly skies...'
and of course Jimbo Morrison famously tacked the words 'stronger than dirt' onto the coda of "Touch Me".

Dude, I had the lyrics in front of me, side-by-side, singing the songs in my head... and I still didn't get it!

Just curious, did the Doors lyrics conclude with "Stronger than Dirt"? On Leo's Lyrics it doesn't ,although it is discussed in the comments.

I don't think it's considered part of the song, but I think it's accepted that they buried a barely audible vocal track with that phrase at the end of the song, since musically it was identical to the Ajax cleanser jingle.
-
who the hell is Leo?
Some guy with a really cool lyrics site, at least it's the only one I know of with a reliable search feature for scattered words & exact phrases.
Annalisa played "Touch Me" yesterday, and it was far from 'barely audible' at the end.

KFOG did this M3S for the Pop Quiz today:
Beatles (yay), "Paperback Writer"
EJ, "Levon"
Pretenders, "Back on the Chain Gang"

I'm pretty sure I got it, but I had to cheat on the Pretenders tune to confirm my guess, so I'll hold off in case anyone else can get it without looking.

They were pretty tough today -- you had to actually come up with the references in the songs...

Which is what a really GOOD M3S is all about -- back in the day, when Dave & Co. did M3S every day, it was usually as hard as this one or harder. But apparently they got complaints about how their contests are geared towards "smart people" and therefore unfair to dummies. (Live 105 used to get similar complaints about the Alex Bennett show -- "they always do smart jokes that I don't get")

Well, from a standpoint of not wanting to alienate a percentage of your listeners, it's probably a good idea not to make the contests too hard, or people start feeling inferior and tuning away to a station that caters to the dummies. Kinda like those stupid "trivia" questions that they run amidst the Coke ads before the previews at the movies.

indeed, those trivia questions -- when theaters first started running those pre-show slide-shows back in the '80s -- used to be fairly hard too. They were actually about old movies (the idea being, if you were in a movie theater, you were probably a movie fan). Then some genius at Coke realized they could tie the questions in with current films (and get studios to maybe, er, cough up a gratuity for having their films mentioned). *sigh*

Well my thinking is that all three refer to a newspaper, "...working for the Daily Mail", "...the New York Times said 'God Is Dead'", "...and the News Of The World".
And for the record, this is exactly the kind of M3S that I love. Kudos to them for this one.

you are correct again, sir! (and it took the Fogheads a while to get it)
-
Yeah, this was a good one for sure. nice job.
I called and got through before song #3, but my guess was Joe Jackson's "Sunday Papers" -- a weak choice knowing that they played it just the other morning in re: The Chronicle.
After the tix slipped through my hands on Tuesday's nine o'clock pop quiz, I've been kicking myself since then and trying hard to win them.

here's a M3S with an interesting connection
(that's a hint, it's not something mentioned in the lyrics, which is my usual take)
Stooges - "1969"
Eric Clapton - "Motherless Children"
Steve Winwood - "Hold On"

All three artists later followed the songs listed with another song with a very similar title:

wow -- good one! There's a Letterman bit there just waiting to happen. "Top Ten Failed Follow-up Singles" -- Zager & Evans, "In The Year 2526", etc.

I couldn't decide which song to leave out, so this is actually a My 4 Songs.
Grateful Dead - "Sugar Magnolia"
Heart - "Crazy On You"
Paul McCartney & Wings - "With A Little Luck"
Elvis Presley - "Its' Now Or Never"

okay, here's a hint: Warwick Davis
-
almost forgot this was unanswered...
Warwick Davis was the titular character in Willow, and all four songs mention willows in the lyrics.
Davis is best known these days as Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter series, but he was also the titular character in all four (egregiously bad) Leprechaun movies. The first of which I saw in Taiwan in 1993, and it featured the film debut of one Jennifer Aniston.

Loves me one Jennifer Aniston though.

That hint was deliberately more obscure than the question itself. But hey, if you knew it, it would've been a giveaway. (and I woulda been hella impressed!) And as you noticed, it opened the door for more interesting trivia.

I put this one up in Monday's set (which contained the Cars song), but no one tried it. I think it's a pretty good one actually.
Cars - Drive
Beatles (Yay!) - Something
Heart - These Dreams

The only thing I can come up with is that they all are structured as two long lines, then two short lines, then one more long line.

Cars - Drive - album is Heartbeart City
Heart - These Dreams album is Heart
... but Beatles (Yay!) - Something is from Abbey Road, not Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band.

Good observation, but I think the Cars' early singles were a roughly even split between Orr and Ocasek.
-

Yes, not just a hit, but arguably their biggest - for the Cars it was their highest charter, for Heart it was their first #1, and for the Beatles it has been their most covered. Both Sinatra & Elvis covered it!

If I remember correctly the same applies to .38 Special, too, for most of their hits. Donnie Van Zant was nominally their lead singer, but most if not all of their hits were sung by Don Barnes, one of their guitarists.

OMG - you are such a nerd! :) Even though now I can easily conjure up each of the three first verses, I would have never thought of that. So the "doo-doodle-do-do-dooo" counts as a long line? ;)

Just realized that you could add Kiss's "Beth" to this list. I can't think of any others offhand, unless Squeeze (Paul Carrack on "Tempted" guest vox) counts.

OMG: there's a "My 3 Songs" Facebook group!
https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/328385933911480/
ETA: Gaz will be interested to hear that the first M3S posted on that page after I joined the group was
1. Bennie and the Jets - Elton John
2. Broken Arrow - Buffalo Springfield
3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
which of course I correctly ID'd as 3 songs with crowd noise and applause that were not actually recorded "live"
