starting w/Eric Clapton "Alibis" (if that's the name), mediocre song, burning guitar.

I believe this is it.  Supposedly written for Beck by Stevie Wonder, who was supposed to have given Superstition to Beck (it was on Beck, Bogert, and Appice) but used it himself.

One of my all time favorite songs.  Actually, the song is a cover of a tune Stevie wrote for (I'm going to get this wrong) Syreeta.  Or someone like that.  It actually has words, or so I understand.  Never have heard it.

Here's a link, includes clip:

And, BTW, it's "Cause" not "Since."

Obviously, I would hope Stevie did not write it 'for' Jeff Beck in the same sense as he would've written it 'for Syreeta.'  My memory has more to deal with the concept of letting someone use a song you wrote.  Like I said, Beck was supposed to get first crack at "Superstition" but Stevie decided to release it himself first.  I'm dealing with thirty year old pre-internet memories, so it's a little hard to dig up.  It makes more sense about Syreeta tho!

Friday 6/3/05: it's 1980. And I'm here early enough to hear the whole thing.

NICE start: Martha & the Muffins, "Echo Beach"!

"Play that fast thing one more time", little-played Rockpile, followed by Dire Straits "Tunnel of Love".  This has been one FINE 1980 set.

Double Damn, I got to my desk early, before 7:40 at least, but my computer was glacially slow & by the time I got the stream going it was 7:48.  Was at least hoping to have been in time for the back announce.

In early today, 1983 on tap.  Just heard "Crumblin' Down", and now it's "One Thing Leads To Another".
