btw, I saw some DVD somewhere with footage of The Association doing a live gig: they were GREAT. 

eta: I think the DVD was part of the Monterey Pop Festival DVD set, btw.

Wow, I've enjoyed this lengthy thread! I'll hear the show tonite in its Madison, Wisconsin incarnation (7-10pm PDT) and I'm looking forward to it. And too bad about KFRC not airing the show -- the station will continue to exist (without jocks) at kfrc.com and there was some hope they'd continue with Casey until the contract runs out. Maybe that's what the marathon 2 weeks ago was about -- meeting some kind of quota.

Ah, yes, a sad day.  If I recall correctly, it was in October 1997 and I was attending a "summer of love" anniversary festival in Golden Gate Park (with performing bands including a Kantner variant on the Airplane and the Sons of Champlin) when I heard the news, amidst the sounds of those awful military planes buzzing above us.  I remember writing a bitter poem called "If 67 Were 97" that night, and I'm pretty sure the news of the crash circulated among us that afternoon.

"Second Avenue" is new to me.  Casey seems to adore it.  I think it almost out-Breads Bread.  Almost.

I'd swear I played the orig Tim Moore version for you a couple years ago when you were here. His was a big "turntable hit" on NYC prog-FM radio. 'tis a lovely song, IMHO, and a perfect fit for Garfunkel.  I hope we get a '73 set in the next few weeks, so we can hear his wonderful "All I Know".

Sure, there were many double-entendre jokes about that song back then.

The Billboard chart that week shows it as "Longfellow's Serenade" -- it would take several weeks for them to correct it. They also listed Helen Reddy's new hit as "Angie Babe"

wow, I'm in a sugar coma with ABBA's Honey Honey.  Not their best, kinda blah for me, but what a formula they hit on!

I've grown to love "Honey Honey" over the years, just 'cause it's one you rarely hear -- even Dave ignores it. One reason it only got to a #27 peak is, there was a cover battle going on -- a Brit group called Sweet Dreams (feat. Polly Brown of Pickettywitch) had a version that charted first and got to #69.

I didn't know Brownsville Station had followed up "Smokin' in the Boys Room" - I thought they were a OHW.

They were a THW, and this gets my WOS hands down. Man, that's an awful single. But EWF's "Devotion" gets my first Lost Gem of the Week award. I love them in that mode.

Mr Weatherly's delivery's a bit wimpy, but I'd've LURVED to have heard Gladys do that one.  And I dig the Steppenwolf too -- can't believe NY prog-FMers ignored that one.

Too bad he didn't OD before "RnRH" and this turkey -- WOS2. "I made a deal with the Angel of Music"?? Yeesh.

The Ohio Players with another example of lyrics that could've rhymed but didn't: if those "bad bad misses" had been "bad bad bitches", they'd've rhymed with "britches" and "stitches". Wonder if they make it rhyme in their live show.
