Zappa plays Zappa redux
« Reply #450 on: May 06, 2007, 09:02:36 PM »
Hey all--
Just a heads-up that Dweezil is hitting the road again this summer playing his dad's music. Not sure who's in the band this time around (last summer was Dweezil and a bunch of young turks, with Napoleon Murphy Brock, Terry Bozzio, and Steve Vai, all alumni of Frank's bands, showing up to lend some cred to the proceedings) but the show I saw then was one of the two or three best things I saw all year. This year it's August 20 (a Monday night--grrr) at Berkeley Community Theater. Hasn't been a major announcment yet, but tix are on sale via Ticketbastard at $50 for the top ticket--not cheap but not ridiculous by today's standards.
Let's get right to it.

Barry Zito doing a charity gig.

"You're invited to join Giants starting pitcher, Barry Zito, Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel, Raquel Aurilia, Sally Zito and Jeff Austin Black as they take the stage for charity on Thursday, May 24 at Ruby Skye in San Francisco. Our Giants stars will be joined with a performance by rock legend, Eddie Money!"

Pay enough and you can meet and greet Barry. Otherwise, general admission.

"Sally Zito" -- his mother? his sister?

Is there anywhere Eddie Money *won't* show up to play?

Greg Kihn must not be far behind.

IIRC, Sally's his sister.

Music was absolutely mediocre. The venue is really nice but sound was either really poor or Sally and her band really sucked. Event was fun. The most "beautiful" people I have ever seen in one place at the same time. Bonds even showed up. I have movie files of Barry Z playing but can't figure out how/where to post a 35 meg file. The Money Man is scary old but seemed to have fun and it was a grand sing along.
Walked to Lefty O'Douls after and just about closed it. First time there, liked.

Not at all surprised. Graham has been on most but not every tour Joe's done. But yes, you would probably do well to catch him.

Here's a chance (or several chances, rather) for me to indulge my love of oldies pop at Coney Island:

I'm especially curious to see the Turtles et al.

Ben Fong-Torres writes in his radio column today:

"Tired of all the Summer of Love nostalgia? Celebrate the summer of '07 with Summerthing, the free KLLC (Alice@97.3) concert today at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Smash Mouth, Everclear and Mat Kearney will play from noon to 4 p.m. Gates open at 11, there's a free bicycle valet service and there will be vendors offering food, arts and crafts, activities and all-around good vibes."

Actually... SmashMouth and Everclear? that's more like the Summer of '97, no?
