That was my immediate reaction, too: "Didn't we just do that year like three weeks ago?" Thanks for saving me the trouble of digging. I guess nearly two months since the last visit is not recent enough that we are justified in bitching.
-
From AL herself:
"I'll post the tunes I played on the last trip so we can come up w/10 solid new "old" tunes from the year"
Nice. :)
& here's my wishlist:
Black Lab - Time Ago
Tori Amos - Spark
The Blenders - (I'm in Love With) the McDonalds Girl
Billie Myers - Kiss the Rain
Savage Garden - To the Moon & Back
Ben Folds Five - Brick
The Smashing Pumpkins - Perfect
Madonna - The Power of Goodbye
'N Sync - Tearin' Up My Heart
Fuel - Shimmer

We've had a suggestion for "Gettin' Jiggy With it" -- would AL really play Will Smith 2 days in a row?
And will Fogheads request songs from our last '98 set even though AL posted that setlist on FB? But of course!
And AL also revealed that she's not a big Madonna fan -- which explains why we never hear Ms Ciccone in '80s sets.

Maybe if he breaks up ;)
Miami would be better, imo.

A Foghead with the initials SRW is on mah LAST nerve, honey!

RGM: In case you missed my comment on FB:
"Show Me Love" by Robyn and "Show Me Love" by Robin S are in fact two entirely different songs.
-
Loved that Ray of Light album......
I requested Wyclef Jean's "Gone Till November" and Public Enemy w/Stephen Stills "He Got Game". The movie featured AL's boy, Ray Allen as Jesus Shuttlesworth. Great film.

I am beyond gobsmacked!

My pants are cranky today, so please take the following with a grain of salt:
The only thing worse than the late 80's on 10@10 is the late 90's, normally a wasteland of boring KFOG standards. However, Annalisa's no repeat pledge is a ray of light, if not a Ray of Light. Let's hope the pledge means no artist repeats because that would mean a change from late 90's/early 00's automatic picks like Cake, Barenaked Ladies and Smashmouth.
-
There does seem to be a lot of love for the "Ray Of Light" album, so maybe, just maybe..

I agree completely. I think late '80s sets have improved under AL (vs. Dave's terminally boring ones), even if today's '88 excursion was a bad example. AL's played way more late '80s pop hits in the last 2 years than Dave did in a decade. But I still can't get a handle on what's "permissable" in '90s sets or what DC's vision is. I will say that late '80s pop hits are (to my ears) more memorable than, say, the endless parade of Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandy, Celine and various "Artist X feat Rapper Y" atrocities.
-
IIRC, Annalisa's late 1980s sets at the beginning were more or less as boring as Dave's, but significantly improved after the first year.

You're fitting in well here already. That's practically an entry requirement.
-
VHM
Todd New Radicals.
-
It's the song that I got my name from & my #1 song of 1999; I'm forced to BOS it.
-
WOS "You Get What You Give". I never quite got the fanfare for this one. Besides which, it's part of regular rotation.
-
but we've just broke down on the side of the road. WOS "So It Goes" -- it's like Cake without the adrenaline.
-

it's the whole Todd-soundalike thing, I think.
-
This So It Goes song is NTM. Worth a VHM, for now.

this was a *seriously* overplayed KFOG staple at the time. Alice too, iirc.
-
BOS2 the jazzy mix of Special that I've heard a few times since DC took over. (I emailed him and he said he dug it out of the archives.)
-
Besides which, it's part of regular rotation.
That's true, it's not the most necessary pick in the world...but I still like it. "Someday We'll Know" would sound good in 1999, though.

BOS from me -- it's NTM, actually.

Maybe b/c it tries very hard to be an anthem. I buy it. I think it succeeds and I like the song, but I can see how some might think it tries too hard.
But what do they have against those nice young Hanson Boys?
-
Not sure what that last song was but it was pretty awesome. BOS.
Edit: Per FB it's RL Burnside.
-
This Everything's Gonna Be All Right tune would have been BOS had they superimposed Conan singing the chorus.
-
completely unnecessary: Dennis Hopper, Bob Seger and Sonny & Cher, which is in way-too-often regular rotation.... much as I liked the song in '98.
-
I just found out that blues remixed thing was R.L. Burnside. Wow. awesome.
BOS2
-
Shawn Mullins, VHM I guess. I agree that it's overexposed, but it could still be a good 10@10 song as long as we're not full of overexposed Alice-types (& for today, we're so far so good). In 1998 it was so different than everything else on pop.

This one's a pretty big sledgehammer for me, as it was in heavy rotation the week I moved to SF in October of '98, and I was listening to the radio a lot as the CDs didn't get unpacked for a couple of weeks. And MP3s didn't really exist in '98. :)
-
Beavis & Butthead would be having a field day if they were listening to this show right now.
-
BOS2 Jonathan Richman.

I think they probably are... heheheh

WOS2 DMB, just because.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! WOS2 DMB.
-
WOS2 DMB, just because.
Dave Matthews Band?
ETA: ooh, my stream lagged. I thought you were thinking of Jonathan Richman.
Crazzzeeeee
-
WOS2 DMB, just because.
DMB is making your sig line come to life ;)
-
I enjoy this DMB song, and this was well before they went bad, so, BOS4.
-
Redeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wilco & Billy Bragg!
-
BOS2 Billy Bragg & Wilco (mostly Wilco) "Cali Stars"
-
I enjoy this DMB song, and this was well before they went bad, so, BOS4.
Yes, I can completely see that. Plus, some good fiddle in this. It's hard to get good violin in pop music.
-
BOS2 Billy Bragg & Wilco (mostly Wilco) "Cali Stars"
Oh my yes. uber-BOS3. Too lovely for words.
-
BOS2 Billy Bragg & Wilco (mostly Wilco) "Cali Stars"
Saw Billy Bragg at HSBG a couple years ago, and he was really great. Just him and his guitar and his beliefs. And those big-cuffed jeans.
Saw Jeff Tweedy at HSBG the year or two before that, and I think he did this one, too. he was also great. Just him and his guitar and his emotions. And his scruffy hair style.
-
WOS3 "Closing Time". Another song I hear daily on KFOG. No fair!
-
BOS2 Billy Bragg & Wilco (mostly Wilco) "Cali Stars"
Sledgehammer #2 in this set. Sarah and I were way into Wilco around this time as she'd known Tweedy in her college years (no, not THAT way--get your mind out of the gutter!) at Missou, so we saw them a lot between '96 and 2001. This one takes me back to their show in SF on New Years Eve 1997, where they debuted a whole lot of Mermaid Ave. material, including this one.
Once again, it seems AL is turning a potentially scary year into a piece of art.
ETA: Gotta give credit to Woody Guthrie as well for California Stars.
-
so, "Mr Announcer Guy" is back again?
yeesh, another current-rotation staple, "Closing Time" -- I nearly predicted this one last nite.
-
WOS3 "Closing Time". Another song I hear daily on KFOG. No fair!
Thank you! the problem with '90s sets in a nutshell.
-

Sounds like he might be crying.
(I actually meant the singer, but maybe this applies to RGMike, too?) :D
-
Closing Time...not quite WOS but completely not necessary. DHM, maybe. :P
-
BOS3 The Donnas, but was hoping for some Madonna....
-
BOS3 The Donnas, but was hoping for some Madonna....
gimme gimme! BOS4. A set of wild extremes.
-
The Shawn Mullins tune is called "Rockabye," innit? AL called it Lullabye in the backsell.
-
It is indeed called Lullaby, though he does say Rock-a-bye quite a lot.

it took me over a decade to get that right.

Heh. We probably were at some of the same concerts together. I've seen Wilco several times at The Fillmore. I'm gonna see them again in January at The Warfield. I like their new stuff OK, but actually prefer the pre-Ghost Is Born Wilco. I guess they don't play a lot of their old songs anymore. Yo, Tweedybird - There's nothing wrong with Passenger Side!

11/02/11 - Wednesday! Great Sounds from 1998 !

Almost certainly. I saw nearly every show they did in SF between 1995 and 2002. Those Fillmore shows during that time were some pretty amazing shows. I'm not such a fan of the newer stuff either--truth be told, I kind of miss the Jay Bennett era. Since he left, I've only really liked one record of theirs: A Ghost is Born. Even Yankee Hotel Foxtrot didn't set my world on fire. And the last time I saw 'em (up here, two years ago), I was pretty unimpressed, so I'm taking a pass this time around.
