BOS2 Billy Bragg & Wilco (mostly Wilco) "Cali Stars"

Saw Billy Bragg at HSBG a couple years ago, and he was really great.   Just him and his guitar and his beliefs.  And those big-cuffed jeans.

Saw Jeff Tweedy at HSBG the year or two before that, and I think he did this one, too.  he was also great.   Just him and his guitar and his emotions.  And his scruffy hair style.

Sledgehammer #2 in this set. Sarah and I were way into Wilco around this time as she'd known Tweedy in her college years (no, not THAT way--get your mind out of the gutter!) at Missou, so we saw them a lot between '96 and 2001. This one takes me back to their show in SF on New Years Eve 1997, where they debuted a whole lot of Mermaid Ave. material, including this one.

Once again, it seems AL is turning a potentially scary year into a piece of art.

ETA: Gotta give credit to Woody Guthrie as well for California Stars.

Sounds like he might be crying.

(I actually meant the singer, but maybe this applies to RGMike, too?)   :D

Closing Time...not quite WOS but completely not necessary.  DHM, maybe.  :P

The Shawn Mullins tune is called "Rockabye," innit? AL called it Lullabye in the backsell.
Let's get right to it.

It is indeed called Lullaby, though he does say Rock-a-bye quite a lot.

Heh.  We probably were at some of the same concerts together.  I've seen Wilco several times at The Fillmore.  I'm gonna see them again in January at The Warfield.  I like their new stuff OK, but actually prefer the pre-Ghost Is Born Wilco.  I guess they don't play a lot of their old songs anymore.  Yo, Tweedybird - There's nothing wrong with Passenger Side!

Almost certainly. I saw nearly every show they did in SF between 1995 and 2002. Those Fillmore shows during that time were some pretty amazing shows. I'm not such a fan of the newer stuff either--truth be told, I kind of miss the Jay Bennett era. Since he left, I've only really liked one record of theirs: A Ghost is Born. Even Yankee Hotel Foxtrot didn't set my world on fire. And the last time I saw 'em (up here, two years ago), I was pretty unimpressed, so I'm taking a pass this time around.
Let's get right to it.
