indeed -- I got that robocall too. Ick!

In addition to that TV spot I mentioned the other day (the No on 8 one with Samuel L Jackson, which had been running quite a bit the past 4 days), I saw one last nite that was a spoof of the John Hodgman/Justin Long, PC/Mac ads -- a young woman says "I'm the constitution", and this creepy "Yes on 8" guy tries to chat her up, but she rebuffs him. Aside from the presidential election, which I have high hopes for at this point, it would be really great if the Dems could capture a few more seats in the senate (is 60 too many to hope for?)

Heard one scary scenario regarding Ted Stevens in Alaska, however. If he's somehow still able to pull off a win after his conviction on seven felony charges, he resigns after he takes office. As governor, Palin gets to appoint his successor, so she appoints herself.

And that, my friends, scares the crap out of me.

Regarding Starbucks and Ben&Jerry's Election Day promotions, heard on newsradio this morn that its illegal to provide gifts in exchange for voting.  I believe the law is no gifts in exchange for a specific vote (person or measure), but promoting the general idea of voting is probably okay, but just as in any other contest "no purchase necessary," so 'Bucks and B&J's legally should give coffee, ice cream to anyone that asks today, no proof of voting necessary!

There are lots of voting anecdotes, some of which are deeply moving, posted over on Politco.com.

Two excerpts:

Tim Schmitz, college professor, SC:
Went to vote at Southside Baptist Church on a cool, clear early morning. Turnout was heavy at 8:30am, and I waited about 90 minutes to touch the screen. When I left the church, one elderly African American woman exclaimed to another: "Oh, happy day! What a joyous and blessed day!" I was struck in a very tangible way by the enormity of what this country is about to do. 

Mark Pepe, Printing Manager, CT:
I voted at 6:45 this morning and found everything went smoothly in our little suburb. As I walked to my car, I found myself behind a 75-ish African-American woman and her son. Almost approaching the parking lot, she stopped and broke down. I overheard her son ask what was wrong. "I NEVER thought I would be able to cast a vote for a black man!" With that, she collected herself (and I myself) and we proceeded to our cars. If this isn't democracy in action, I don't know what is!

very first results of the day:

with 3% of Indiana precincts reporting it's Obama 50-48.
with 9% of Kentucky precincts rporting it's McCain 51-48.

Polls closed 2 mins ago in VT, VA, SC, KY, IN & GA.
