One of the things I love about Facebook is seeing at a glance, based on people's "status" updates, what issues are of interest among my various social circles (the music geeks, the work colleagues, the college buddies, the musicians, the hookups, the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads).  Here are some contacts' reactions to today's news:

This is a bigger deal than we're getting, especially given the lingering suspicions that Bristol is actually the daughter's child, not Sarah's.  It's all very convoluted.  But I strongly believe that the end result of all this will be that (a) Palin will resign herself from consideration, citing understandably overwhelming family concerns; and (b) McCain, having found his PUMA trial balloon deflated, will return and resort to a more "traditional" candidate, whoever that may be.

That party's in a clusterfuck right now.  And it's getting what it deserves.

OK... let's get real here. I don't like her either, but that's pretty preposterous, no? A very public servant -- a governor -- can pretend to be pregnant for nine months? and hide her pregnant teen daughter?  I realize it's Alaska, but come on.

A friend from St. Louis sent this on, from a columnist at the Post-Dispatch:

“Amy Gwin, 43, of University City, grew up in Alaska and competed in the Miss Wasilla, Alaska, competition in 1984 against GOP vice presidential choice Sarah Palin.  Gwin said Friday that she won the Miss Congeniality award in the competition, although Palin’s Wikipedia entry says she (Palin) won the contest—and the Miss Congeniality award.  Gwin was a year behind Palin, now 44, at Wasilla High School, which had about 800 students.  Gwin said Palin was “a high school star in a good way,” a beauty who got good grades and excelled at athletics.  Gwin, who was president of her class, does not recall Palin holding school office.  The Wikipedia entry on Palin said she was head of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and captain of the basketball team.  Gwin said she was not surprised when Palin became governor of Alaska, but is astonished that she got the GOP nod for vice president.  Asked whether she would support Palin because she knows her, Gwin said:  “I wouldn’t support her if she was my very best friend.  I support Obama and don’t share any of Palin’s politics.  She’s very shallow.”

Two of my coworkers were talking about this.  One said that the term used by Alaskans to describe Sarah Palin is 'Caribou Barbie'.  The other said he'd seen young master Levi's MySpace page, and every other word was f*ck.  "All I care about is effing hockey, I don't want no effing kids or effing wife or effing nuthin'" or words to that effect.
