I figured this deserves a thread of its own rather than cluttering up the other one.
Tonite (10/24/11) the theme is "Fools". I'm tempted to suggest Streisand/Gibb "What Kind of Fool". But I already have tix for "Race" at ACT (this week's prize).

Dred sez: are you feeling lucky? Because tonight at 8 pm on KFOG Connected, our connection will be... LUCK
Suggest your favorite luck-related songs - good luck, bad luck, whatever you think is best; you could win tickets to see David Mamet's "Race" at the American Conservatory Theater on November 2.
Easy peasy: JoBoxers "Just Got Lucky". One of my all time faves...even though I don't know what "feeling Jake" means. Or do I?

This is probably what got it done. I just took all the "fall" songs that I liked off my iPod.
Weezer, Falling for You
Opal, A Falling Star
The New Pornographers, Falling Through Your Clothes
and [cringing] Velvet Revolver, Fall to Pieces

Btw, big ups to you for having the New Pornos in your library. LOVE that band--Carl Newman is a pop genius. Which reminds me: they had a new record earlier this year that I don't yet own.

urth, I checked out two New Pornographers CD's (Twin Cinema, Together) from the library, downloaded them, and am chuffed every time one of their songs pops up on my iPod shuffle. I didn't listen, so I don't know which songs he played, but it's possible he didn't play any. The songs aren't up of the Connected page yet.

Funny, he liked my requests, but he didn't play any. Autumn Almanac (not mine) was the only request taken off the FB page.
Dred's tastes are eclectic: his blog (not updated since he's become a KFOG dj) is very indie rock, not resembling KFOG format at all:

the kfog tune genie revels they played:
8:12 Grateful Dead Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion
8:14 Pixies Monkey Gone to Heaven
seems like we're missing a couple songs, and the times are off: The Pixies song must be more than 2 minutes.

oops, yes, that's what I meant, the Dead song has to be more than two minutes -- why, it takes that long for Phil to find his Zone!

Actually, Golden Road... is just barely over 2 minutes. 2:07, to be exact. It's the opening track on their eponymous first album. And there's a shorter song on that album--Sitting on Top of the World at 2:01. Safe to say the live versions were not so brief, nor probably any song on any other record.
Sounds like Dred may be a bit of a Kinks fan. That's at least the second fairly obscure Kinks tune he's pulled out for Connected in the last few weeks.

Do the songs have to have "Counting" in the title, or is a lyric by that word sufficient?

It doesn't have to have the actual word, but at least something related to the subject.
Beatles - "All Together Now"
Proxy of RG: Tom Robinson Band - "2-4-6-8 Motorway". Haay!
Genesis - "Counting Out Time" NTM...and not bad!
XTC - "(1,2,3,4,5) Senses Working Overtime"
Oops dead air. 1,2,3,4,5.............

November 3: Action!

"Let's See Action," Pete Townshend
November 2: Gone

Regrettably, "Connected" doesn't come on at a very convenient time for me (generally it's dinnertime, and my wife has beat me to the telly to watch some old horror show). Although, I did DVR this time I won something!

Holiday in Waikiki - The Kinks
I always forget about that one, but probably because the Kinks' OTHER vacation song, called (what else?) "Holiday" is one of my faves. Off Muswell Hillbillies, natch.
"Lyin' on the beach, my back burned rare,
The salt gets in my blisters and sand gets in my hair,
The sea's an open sewer but I really couldn't care,
I'm breathing through my mouth so I don't have to sniff the air.
"Oh holiday,
Oh what a lovely day today,
I'm so glad they sent me away,
To have a little holiday."
-
Hey there - Steve Rockwell here - in for Dred this evening. Tonight at 8 on KFOG Connected, with a certain holiday just a couple days away, we're all about giving THANKS! (Gee, I wonder what tomorrow's theme might be...?) For Jayhawks tix.
No Alanis, please!
Wouldn't mind hearing "Thanks I Get" by Wilco.
November 21: Holiday
"Holiday," Bee Gees
"Dreadlock Holiday," 10 C.C.
"Tommy's Holiday Camp," the Who
"Holidays in the Sun," Sex Pistols
"Holiday," Vampire Weekend

I requested four songs. I don't want to be greedy, but I'd much rather see The Jayhawks than Lewis Black, for whom I won tickets a few weeks ago.

Yoicks, Rockwell is up to a rocky start...dead air, starting and stopping the song, more dead air, etc. He first played Bonnie Raitt's "I Thank You" and said it was a bonus track. Hot mess. Sigh, I miss Dred already.
Sly and his mice elves "officially" begin the set now.
Here's Dido and Stan with her thankful, but boring self.
Led Zeppelin...I'll take it! I also take it we're not getting any mind-blowing surprises this time around.
Josh wins!!!! Woo hoo! He wants you to call him for the tix, BTW.

Read the other requests, though. Any time you want the prize offered, dig semi-deep and you'll have a decent shot (especially if there's a guest dj who doesn't know the recent winners' names ;))

Got a GIVING-related song to suggest? Feel free to do so below. Best suggestion as determined by our tryptophan-addled judges gets its perpetrator a couple tickets to see the Jayhawks at the Fillmore in February.

There must be a lot of previous winners making requests; the guy who won only requested one song, the obvious "People Are Strange," and wasn't even the first one who requested it. Maybe he made requests some other way (do people still call or e-mail?) or maybe he was the only one who wanted to see Andrew Bird.

one would hope that Elvis Costello's version of "My Funny Valentine" would make the cut.
Funny, that was the only one that came to mind, but I thought of it as a Valentine's Katrina, so I didn't list it. Also, I don't like it that much. Also, the college-aged boyfriend of a girl I liked in high school sang it for her with his band at, like, a winter formal. Plus, he was a competitive college swimmer or water polo player, or something. Grrrr.

It would seem to be appropriate if Dred played at least one "Valentine" song that wasn't love-related.
Any songs about the Valentine's Day Massacre or Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine?

Kudos to the FB Foghead who suggested "Gonna Buy Me a Dog" by the Monkees. Totally off-the-wall suggestion: "Walking My Cat Named Dog" by Norma Tanega (from 1968; it was later covered by Dr Hook). Most obvious suggestion EVAH: someone actually asked for Florence and the Machine. Oy.

Someone at KFOG dot com had a copy and paste oops. Haven't checked the KFOG Radio page, but I'd be willing to wager someone has already thrown out Space Oddity. Great song, but still . . . [ETA: DB did qualify her Bowie request with "Someone has to say it"] The only other "song" springing to mind right away is Sun Ra's Space Is the Place [ETA: sprang to ggould's mind too].

Excellent call, gentlemen. If that one doesn't register, there's another Sun Ra tune called "We Travel the Spaceways" that might fill the bill. That Sun Ra liked his space, but when you're from Saturn, what else is there?

And now, TC
BTW, I'd take unwanted Crows AND NASCAR tickets. Quite a prize.
I won a couple months back and got BB King tickets, which I didn't really want, so I offered them up here and some lucky dude snatched them up.
Because my suggestion for last night's veggie set was, ahem, SO FREAKING AWESOME, I didn't want to run the risk of winning Counting Crows tickets that I didn't really want. (How's that saying go again? Oh yeah. "You can's spell CROWS without W-O-S.")
I certainly would have been excited to get NASCAR tickets, though, even though it's a road course, which might detract from the full Bubba effect of typical NASCAR (Trivia question: Besides Infineon Raceway, what is the only other road course on the NASCAR circuit?)
I've always been vaguely interested in seeing a live NASCAR race. I watched the last part of the Dayton 500 last night, I turned on the TV after seeing the story online about the huge explosion that had just happened when a driver plowed into a maintenance truck laden with jet fuel (no one was seriously hurt.) Also, I was a little bored and don't have cable. :) (In other words, I probably would not have watched it had it been Sunday when the race was supposed to have been completed.)
It was a pretty fun time. The drivers had to wait while they patched the track after the fire, and the Fox coverage crew did interviews to fill in the downtime with the various driver and crew dudes (I didn't see Danica Patrick interviewed, but the camera showed her heading off to make a personal "ladies" pit stop. :)
The drivers were pretty interesting for the most part, and gol-durnit they all seem so young. Also, because the race had seen so many unusual events -- multiple rain delays, the big crash and fire, the urgent re-paving job on the scarred track -- everyone was a little excited and it wasn't always the usual "yeah, we have to race hard, we have a good car, yadda" blather in the interviews. (Well, I suppose it was mostly the usual stuff.....) But one driver, Brad Keselowski, mentioned his twitter account and later they said he picked up 50k twitter followers in an hour.
here's his twitter acct >> http://twitter.com/keselowski
and an image he tweeted:
So anyway, it was pretty fun...

**Thursday (March 8): in honor of International Women's Day, tonight's connection is WOMAN
Suggest your favorite woman-related song; you could win tickets for Madness at the Warfield in SF on Thursday, April 19th.
Hear me roar! I also like Urge Overkill's Woman 2 Woman. Of course there's Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon; I wonder whether the Urge Overkill or Neil Diamond version will be requested first.
what would totally floor me would be John & Yoko, "Woman is the Nigger of the World" -- no chance, I guess. But Helen Reddy would be nice.

Knowing Dred, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" would have a chance.

[Steve Stevens starts shreddin']
When you hear the music you make a dip
Into someone else's pocket then make a slip.
Steal a car and go to las vegas oh, the gigolo pool.
Hanging out by the state line,
Turning holy water into wine
Drinkin' it down
I'm on a bus on a psychedelic trip
Reading murder books tryin' to stay hip.
I'm thinkin' of you you're out there so
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.

Hmm, I'm sensing a week-long theme brewing. REM's Green Grow the Rushes is a good ol' tune from Fables of the Reconstruction, in the midst of their transition from jangly college rock gods to "intelligent pop" idols.

I listened to the songs, and they are great. Petty's is from his first album and is straight-up, Raspberries power pop. The Eno is from one of his most acclaimed albums, Another Green World, and is one of more traditionally structured, less purely ambient of the tracks.

Can't say for certain, but everything I heard about the guy who had the exclusive contract to book shows at the Maritime reinforced the theory that he was a major schmuck. He tried to get over on everyone. If I remember correctly, the Longshoremen's Union (which owns the Maritime Hall building) refused to renew the contract when it was up and decided they didn't really want to be in the concert business after all. Too bad, it was a nice room. I saw Merle Haggard there, as well as P-Funk and a few others I'm forgetting right now.

Buck Dharma still kills it on every song. I sometimes wish he would change guitars, he ALWAYS plays the same one. But, hey, it never sounds bad...

Recent KFOG Connected Playlists...
If I haven't already said this, I appreciate you keeping track of these set-lists -- I'm rarely near a radio at 8pm and wish I could hear Connected more often than I do.
No problem, brutha!
Judging by these setlists, one oughta be rarely disappointed when listening. Unfortunately, 8PM is a highly competetive time slot.

Man, there are some Connected frequent flier bands/acts: Elvis C., Bruce, U2, and, most of all, one of tonight's selections, the Rolling Stones (lesser FF's include Kinks and REM). Granted these are all brilliant acts and the tracks chosen are excellent and almost never the obvious ones, but give some other bands a chance, man.
BTW, excellent request for Tim Buckley, ggould.

As with the 10@10 sets of the last few months, there's an easily discernible pattern that applies to most (but not all) of these sets. Essentially he's obligated to play one song from a current kfog artist (David Gray, U2, etc) and the rest can be whatever Dred chooses.

I noticed that Sunday morning, Acoustic Sunrise was rather heavy on acoustic versions of KFOG faves and a lot lighter on the stuff Rosalie usually plays that is unique to the show. I was hoping it was an aberration.

Well, there's a new PD in town, and obviously he wants to get his fingers into just about everything. See also: Dennis Constantine.

Even at his worst, DC (who I still stand by my opinion of) was much better than the changes we’re currently seeing. For one, Dred still had creative control over Connected (and for much of the evenings, as during his timeslot I kept on hearing deeper tracks outside of Connected, i.e. Blondie “Dreaming”)

Yeah, it seemed that the homogeneity was confined to M-F day time hours under DC, whereas now it's all the time.

Looks like "Connected" is no more.

officially, Connecrted is suspended "indefinitely" -- allegedly the PD is trying to see if ratings go down without it, and if they do then it will return, I guess.

LN means Least Necessary, similar to a FF (Frequent Flier) but basically a song ( a predictable "classic", let's say) you've heard way too many times.
