One of the things I find curious about the Coulter phenomenon is how witless her jokes are. Forget for a minute the offensive aspect of her Edwards remark. Just look at it on its face. What's the source of the humor? Edwards isn't gay. He doesn't seem gay. So aside from the fact that she's despicable, she's also not funny. She's not observant. She hasn't paid attention enough to Edwards to find something clever to say about him. Bergson said that that laughter reinforces the truth. We hear a truth stated unexpectedly, and, taken by surprise at the illumination, we laugh. But people like Coulter don't have any truth on their side. There's nothing they have to say, in earnest or in jest, that's true in any way, and so they can't be funny. That's why Fox's new answer to Colbert and Stewart needs a laugh track. The jokes are witless. They depend on the audience's ignorance and prejudice, not information. They depend, in short, on either stupidity or bigotry. And right now they have the market covered in both areas. Throughout American history, the two parties have taken turns being right and wrong. Coulter's party, though, is really relishing this moment of historical wrongness. They are rolling around in Wrong. They're trying for Wrong in every way. They're succeeding.
