Constitutional law, 21st century version

Just when you think they can't get any more audacious, the GOP gets even more arrogant:

Habeas corpus? What's that?

Of course, with the Supreme Court that's currently sitting, he might be more right than we know.
Let's get right to it.

randy newman's got a few words to say!

A Few Words in Defense of Our Country
I’d like to say a few words
In defense of our country
Whose people aren’t bad nor are they mean
Now the leaders we have
While they’re the worst that we’ve had
Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen

Let’s turn history’s pages, shall we?

Take the Caesars for example
Why within the first few of them
They were sleeping with their sister
Stashing little boys in swimming pools
And burning down the City
And one of ‘em, one of 'em
Appointed his own horse Consul of the Empire
That’s like vice president or something

That’s not a very good example, is it?

But wait, here’s one, the Spanish Inquisition
They put people in a terrible position
I don’t even like to think about it

Well, sometimes I like to think about it

Just a few words in defense of our country
Whose time at the top
Could be coming to an end
Now we don’t want their love
And respect at this point is pretty much out of the question
But in times like these
We sure could use a friend

Hitler. Stalin.
Men who need no introduction

King Leopold of Belgium. That’s right.
Everyone thinks he’s so great
Well he owned The Congo
He tore it up too
He took the diamonds, he took the gold
He took the silver
Know what he left them with?

Malaria

A President once said,
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"
Now it seems like we’re supposed to be afraid
It’s patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
That’s what terror means, doesn’t it?
That’s what it used to mean

[To the first eight bars of  "Columbia The Gem Of The Ocean"]

You know it pisses me off a little
That this Supreme Court is gonna outlive me
A couple of young Italian fellas and a brother on the Court now too
But I defy you, anywhere in the world
To find me two Italians as tightass as the two Italians we got

And as for the brother
Well, Pluto’s not a planet anymore either

The end of an empire is messy at best
And this empire is ending
Like all the rest
Like the Spanish Armada adrift on the sea
We’re adrift in the land of the brave
And the home of the free

Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.

It's very Borat.  The wispy mustache is a dead giveaway like Shalimar.

It's very odd -- if you follow the link to the band's MySpace page ( http://www.myspace.com/eveningservice ) It has a message that says

"Everybody, we are getting alot of hits right now. People want to know why we're letting Gays be our friends. Well, we never said "We Hate Fags". We want to change this world. So please, come one come all."

WTF?

Well I've been Googling, and there seems to be much debate as to whether it's real.  The chorus of the song would seem to be a clue:

"Read the bible and you’ll be sure
to enter Heaven. There’s no back door.
Righteous man, get on your knees.
There lies no virtue in sodomy."

"Back Door"??? ROTFL!

The main website of the band, lovegodsway.com (yes, they do a re-written version of the PsyFurs "Love My Way", har har) is really cheap'n'cheezy looking.

I just ran across two more links to other lovegodsway pages on another music site I read occasionally:

http://lovegodsway.org/GayBands

http://lovegodsway.org/SafeBands

I'm not sure which is more ludicrous--the gay bands or the safe ones. The Doors and the Dead and the Stones? And Frank Sinatra--who knew? But Cyndi Lauper is safe. OK. Guess they haven't heard She-bop lately. And be sure to read the parenthetical info with some of the bands--apparently Ted Nugent's loincloth of 30-odd years ago stuck in someones memory and got him listed on this page--I'm sure he'd be livid if he knew.

What's really funny is that Sufjan Stevens is on the dangerous list, but Danielson is on the safe one, and Sufjan started out as part of the Danielson Famile (sic) before going out on his own. Just shows how little these people know.

(Coincidentally, I just saw the documentary about Danielson at the Red Vic tonight. Knew little if anything about Daniel Smith and his various Danielson incarnations, but have to say I'm intrigued. This guy (and his family) seem to truly get what Christianity is about, live by it, and center their art around it, but don't get heavy-handed or judgemental about it. And he's got a truly unique sound. The film could have had a few scenes cut and not missed them in the slightest, but a really interesting picture of an artist I honestly knew nothing about. Mike, if you (or anyone else) have a chance to get over to the Vic by tomorrow night (Sunday), highly recommended.
Let's get right to it.

I plan on showing this in my classes.  That's pretty wacked out.  I was showing the opening of 2001, and a couple of girls came up to  me and said they couldn't watch it because of their religion, and evolution.  I just told them it had nothing to do with religion, and sent them back to their seats!

WTF?

more from donnie:

"Oscar Wilde, my hero, was a reformed homosexual. He went to prison for his sins. Once he was alone with his thouhgts, in jail, he saw the errors of his ways and repented. He died as a Christian. While I'm not advocating jailing all Homosexuals, I do think it would benefit them greatly. It would be for their own good. When a person is forced to think they will generally be able to see their problems and solve them by themselves."
