for you jellyfish fans, my version of "long time go" has just been posted on the jellyfish tribute site:

http://www.myspace.com/jellyfishtributealbum

they're taking submissions to be included with the 2-disc tribute album in september. i recorded it on garageband. i'm learning a bit more about the program. so the only real instruments are the guitars (acoustic plugged into my laptop, then effects added in garageband) and vocals. i recorded my dad talking trash on skype.

sometimes technology is so cool.

I'd like to use it more also.  I just got an Alesis mixer which comes with Cubase, but haven't even opened it up yet.  How many tracks were you able to lay down, and how much horsepower does your Mac have?

i used 11 software tracks and 12 real instrument tracks. i have a powerbook. 1.5/512. let me know how the alesis works out for you. i'm considering purchasing a mixer soon, and was looking at that one. i'm not certain about trying to wrangle a new program, but i think cubase might have some options that garageband doesn't (like punching in and out, for example).

I've got an iBook G4 1.33/1.5G so I hope it can handle some tracks.  I figured if I used an external firewire drive it would do better than using the internal.

i'm involved in an international tape mix swap, and the theme is "music for cars". i'm trying to find song that mention models of cars (e.g., kenny loggins, "mr. night") to add. any suggestions?

There's about 10,000 hip-hop songs that mention the Bentley and the Lam-bor-ghi-ni.

Thew new Josh Rouse album, Country Mouse City House, is simply gorgeous, particularly the opening and closing tracks, "Sweetie" and "Snowy."  Now I *have* to buy 1972.

And while checking out Rouse's website, I noticed this, which I'm for the moment finding very tempting:

Quote
Set sail with Josh Rouse, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris and more!
Join Josh along on a truly unique music experience, Cayamo: A Journey Through Song, February 4-10, 2008. Cayamo is a 6-day Caribbean cruise featuring live performances by the legendary Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris, in addition to Josh Rouse, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Brandi Carlile, Buddy Miller, Danny Flowers, The Duhks, Ari Hest, Edwin McCain, Shawn Mullins, Oval Opus and more. Josh will be joined by other great songwriters and emerging artists for the inaugural cruise, which stops in Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Cayamo sets sail from Miami FL on Monday, February 4 and returns Sunday, February 10, 2008. Cruise fare starts at $799/pp (US$) based on double-occupancy. We hope you’ll join Josh Rouse and friends next year for a magical vacation. Full details are available at www.Cayamo.com. Visit today to subscribe to the Cayamo mailing list – make sure to book your cabin early to get the best pick on cabins & seats to the main theater shows! Cayamo tickets are on sale now!

I'll let you all know if I actually pursue this.

This is just too cute for its own good:

Hellogoodbye, "Baby, It's Fact

Really the best sunshine pop I've heard all year.

Another grand new track, this one described by critics as "West Coast psychedelia," and I didn't know such a scene existed today.  I'd love to see these guys live.  (PS: Seems more correct to post these here than on the YouTube thread.)

Caribou, "Melody Day"

Speaking of covers... (stretch of a segueway...)

We've already booked flights, rooms and bought general admission tickets for Bumbershoot up in Seattle at the end of the month, but there's a contest for VIP passes (reserved seating, special lounge and swag, etc.) awarded to the best playlist made up of this and previous years' performers. Your vote (one per day per email address through Aug. 22) could help us win!

Here's our playlist:

17: Bumbershoot: Unoriginals
They're not really unoriginal. They're covers. Who doesn't love a great cover?

1. Mahna Mahna (Sesame Street, Piero Umiliani) - Cake
2. Fight The Power (Public Enemy) - Barenaked Ladies
3. Sealion (Nina Simone - "See-Line Woman") - Feist
4. Brick House (The Commodores) - Joan Osborne
5. Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg) - Gourds
6. Straight Outta Compton (N.W.A.) - Nina Gordon (w/ Bring the Rock, 2004)
7. Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-a-Lot) - Jonathan Coulton
8. Oops! I Did It Again (Britney Spears) - Richard Thompson
9. Toxic (Britney Spears) - Nickel Creek
10. Take It On The Run (REO Speedwagon) - Sera Cahoone
11. Starman (David Bowie) - Mates of State
12. Maneater (Nelly Furtado) - Panic! At The Disco
13. Careless Whisper (George Michael) - The Gossip
14. Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) - Blind Boys of Alabama
15. School's Out (Alice Cooper) - The Donnas

And here's where you can vote for us, Entry #17, Bumbershoot: Unoriginals:

http://bumbershoot.org/cd-competition-voting.htm

Thanks!  (Oh, I'm eventually going to provide pointers to iTunes and YouTube where you can hear snippets of pretty much all the songs above -- here it is.  They really are some of my favorite covers.  Well, except that Panic! At The Disco one.  I threw that in to get some of the emo vote.  :-}
