ok, maybe i'm just dying for good american pop music, but i downloaded miss aguilera's "ain't no other man" this morning, and it's been on almost constant repeat. i've even choreographed a sofadance for it. is that wrong? i love this song.

It's an insanely well-produced track, and Christina can sing the hell out of anything & doesn't have to bother with subtlety here.  It'll make a lot of critics' Top 10 lists.
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

I had just finished signing my life away (more later on that in the job thread) when I got in the car, turned on KPIG, and the DJ introduced the next tune with a tone of voice that I ought to pay attention.  The guy's name is James Hunter, and maybe you guys already know about him, but it was very cool.  The title song "People Gonna Talk" is what they played, and I was really impressed.  It sounded new and old at the same time.  Really sounded like Sam Cooke, with that natural sweetness, but the music was kinda reggae, kinda pop.  Check out his web site:

Hey -- KFOG have been playing him in their New Music Thursday ghetto (heh) since Apr 6.  I really really dug the track "No Smoke Without Fire", which had a great horn groove a la James Brown.  But yeah, his voice is much more Sam Cooke than JB.

After listening to the samples I can't help thinking that "Watch & Chain" is a rip-off of/tribute to "It's All Right".

Also, the photos and music make me reminisce about my all-time favorite movies, "The Commitments".  "Dublin Soul!"

[I really ought to buy the DVD, as I don't think the crap VHS copy (along with the soundtracks vol 1 and 2 on cassette!) will stand the test of time.]

Gaz (and anyone else) -- have you heard this "I Wish I was a Punk Rocker With Flowers in My Hair" song?  KFOG played it again this AM, can't remember the (British) woman's name. Great lyrics, which coulda been written by Gaz (were he a Brit).

I haven't heard it, but thought I'd check out the lyrics:

Chorus:
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69 revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

That'd be Sandi Thom.  Bizarre that they played new music on a Friday, especially in the morning.  Irish Greg must've snuck it in when Dave wasn't looking/listening.

There's a whole backstory that all DJs/tv hosts feel obligated to reference about how her rise in fame came from webcasting shows for 21 nights straight from her basement in the UK.  There is a dispute over whether the idea was hers or her promoters.  There is also dispute over whether this really led to a record deal.

Whatever.  It is a great tune with a fine hook and a hearty delivery.

However, after watching her perform other songs on Morning Becomes Eclectic, I guess I'm less impressed.

Watch it here:  http://www.kcrwmusic.com/smil/mb060628Sandi_Thom.ram

Still, it'd be nice to hear this in regular rotation on KFOG.

Hell no there's nothing wrong with that.  It's a great song.  I long for the outfits of the Dirrrty era though.  :-}

Bluegrass Van Halen covers with David Lee Roth?  Brad Kava sez: Worst. Album. EVAH!

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/06/david_lee_roths.html

Bah -- bluegrass Van Halen covers?  Surely you know about Hayseed Dixie (say it out loud) a bluegrass band that covered AC/DC and later various metal/rock classics as well as a KISS tribute album.

http://www.hayseed-dixie.com/

Oh, and while we're on the topic of covers, here's an excellent podcast devoted to finding odd, rare, and just plain cool covers:

http://www.coverville.com/

Here's a few shows that feature Hayseed Dixie:

(J. Geils Band's Centerfold)

http://www.coverville.com/archives/2006/02/coverville_176.html
(AC/DC's Highway to Hell)

And my all-time favorite (is there more than one?) folksy Van Halen cover has got to be Aztec Camera's "Jump":

Complete song as part of another Coverville:

Finally -- last comment about bluegrass and covers -- we saw Nickel Creek play at the Mountain Winery on July 1 (thank you Rosalie!), and they did play their scorching cover of Brittney Spears' Toxic.  Oh man, soooo much fun.

Great show too -- those kids are super talented and have a great sense of humor to boot.

at the bottom of this Aidin Vaziri blog piece there's a link to a mash-up of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and the Raconteurs "Steady As She Goes" with samples of GrandMaster Flash thrown in for good measure:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=3&entry_id=7257

in addition, Vaziri's article on "Crazy" and other songs of Summer '06 in the actual published Chronicle today mentions a song called "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" by Camera Obscura -- a Lloyd Cole tribute of some sort, I'm guessing. Anyone heard it?

with no Drive 10@10 today, I'm listening to KFOG, and here's that new Who thing -- an 11-minute "medley" of parts of six songs from their forthcoming "mini-rock-opera".  Sounds very, er, Who-like.

I didn't hear the intro, but it sounded like the Who to me, and after a while, I was wondering "What happened to the Morning Show?  Have they been kidnapped?"  It was nice to have so much focus on music for a change.

I heard it as well--actually delayed my departure for work just to hear the end of it--and while I heard some good melodies, and it was unmistakeably the Who (or rather, Townshend and Daltrey; I'm still of the opinion it hasn't been really the Who since Keith died, but I digress), I was also struck by how markedly Pete's voice has changed over the last 6 years or so. Roger, well, his voice has matured over the years too, but he still sounds more or less like he did in the late 80s. But Pete is sounding much more nasal, and his range has dropped a good half an octave at least.  I'm not sure that's good or bad, but it will take some getting used to.

And I'd be willing to bet we don't hear the full 11-minute version of that 'single' on KFOG again until next Thursday.

BOS Elvis is Everywhere, Mojo Nixon.

oops wrong thread.
Let's get right to it.

who needs The Who? Frampton's back!

I just stumbled across The Bone's weekly new music hour (didn't know they had one), and they played something from Frampton's new all-instrumental album (with the mandatory plethora of guest stars). He did a cover of "Black Hole Sun". All together now : "WHY?"

They also played Billy Idol covering "In the Summertime". Yeesh.

Dar Williams and Ani Difranco cover "Comfortably Numb":

http://www.darwilliams.com/media.html

I kinda like it.  I think it'd get slammed by the Fogheads if they played it on a New Music Thursday.
