I just watched the "Reeling In The Years" clip.  Who knew Derek Smalls was in the early Dan lineup?

Paris Hilton cops Gwen Stefani's sound and, as the Jane editors aptly noted, sets it to a TrimSpa ad video:

and cops the video from Madonna, no?  Of course, Stefani cops from Madge all the time, so it's all relative. The song sounds a bit like a UB40 tune whose name escapes me.

Chili Peppers rippin' off Petty? You be the judge:

Hmm. I just listened to the audio clip (up to the point that they start taking listener calls anyway) and while I think there's definitely a case there, it seems to me like they've shifted the tempo of the Petty tune a little bit so it matches the RHCP song. I recall Mary Jane's Last Dance being a little slower, a bit more loping of a rhythm whereas the one I'm hearing in the aircheck is significantly more upbeat. Anyone agree/disagree?
Let's get right to it.

Yeah, the RHCP song is a bit faster. Same melody, tho'. And of course same producer on both!

I thought I posted something about the similarity when I first heard it but must not have. I remember driving and hearing what I thought was a mash up or Petty doing a unique rendition of MJLD. It was the RHCP but the new disc was just coming out.

Geoff especially might be interested in this, as will anyone who loved Firesign Theater. These guys were nowhere near as well-known as FT but they were right up there, artistically, and now there's a 2-CD set of their stuff. They were the Conception Corporation:

James Hunter
« Reply #224 on: June 26, 2006, 02:44:39 PM »
I had just finished signing my life away (more later on that in the job thread) when I got in the car, turned on KPIG, and the DJ introduced the next tune with a tone of voice that I ought to pay attention.  The guy's name is James Hunter, and maybe you guys already know about him, but it was very cool.  The title song "People Gonna Talk" is what they played, and I was really impressed.  It sounded new and old at the same time.  Really sounded like Sam Cooke, with that natural sweetness, but the music was kinda reggae, kinda pop.  Check out his web site:

http://www.jameshuntermusic.com

It seems like you can hear the whole song here:

http://www.jameshuntermusic.com/base.html

and it looks like he's coming to town 7/28:

Oh, he doesn't look much like Sam Cooke:
