I had just finished signing my life away (more later on that in the job thread) when I got in the car, turned on KPIG, and the DJ introduced the next tune with a tone of voice that I ought to pay attention.  The guy's name is James Hunter, and maybe you guys already know about him, but it was very cool.  The title song "People Gonna Talk" is what they played, and I was really impressed.  It sounded new and old at the same time.  Really sounded like Sam Cooke, with that natural sweetness, but the music was kinda reggae, kinda pop.  Check out his web site:

http://www.jameshuntermusic.com

It seems like you can hear the whole song here:

http://www.jameshuntermusic.com/base.html

and it looks like he's coming to town 7/28:
http://www.musichallsf.com/artist_pages/james_hunter_072806.htm

Oh, he doesn't look much like Sam Cooke:

Revived because CNN.com's just done a piece on him:

I stumbled across a Fleetwood Mac fan site, that offers downloads once a week of different songs.  Right now, they are featuring different versions of "Before the Beginning" from Then Play On.  I have to strongly suggest you at least download the Shrine 69 version (Rod, you should really like this one) and the studio version to see how it turned out.  There's an odd schmaltzy version (labeled Clifford Davis version) too, only of interest to the weirdos.  Check it out:

PS, these are actually high-rez MP3's!

Shocker of the summer: I'm listening to the new Toby Keith single, "A Little Too Late," this week for the Stylus Singles Jukebox -- and it's really fucking good!  Reminds me a lot of the '73 output from Charlie Rich and BJ Thomas.  Did Billy Sherrill come back from the dead?  I didn't think TK had talent in him -- I thought he was just a jingoistic novelty act.  Color me corrected, for this one song at least.

He's not untalented; he just chose to become a jingoistic novelty act because there was money in it (that's not to say he doesn't also believe what he says, just that he realized he could clean up as well).

Earlier on, he was on his way to being Mr Sensitive at one point -- his divorced-dad duet with Sting is actually rather nice, IMHO.

The Captain Comes Around

This could be interesting.  Of course, I never got around to hearing a single note of Peachtree Road, so I couldn't say where Elton's at musically these days (probably more midtempo piano pop like Songs From the West Coast, right?).

Elton Unveils 'Captain' Track List, Release Date

August 11, 2006, 4:25 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Elton John has set a Sept. 19 release date for his new studio album, "The Captain and the Kid." As first revealed here last September, the Rocket/Island set is a sequel to the artist's 1975 album "Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy." First single "The Bridge" will be available Aug. 22 from Apple's iTunes Music Store.

"It was [Sanctuary Group CEO Merck Mercuriadis'] idea, because he said, 'You're always saying how [songwriting partner] Bernie [Taupin] has become the Brown Dirt Cowboy' -- he lives on a ranch in Santa Ynez [Calif.] -- and I'm this guy who plays concert after concert, buying art, buying photographs, living a very lavish lifestyle," John told Billboard. "I've become Captain Fantastic."

John will premiere the material at an intimate Sept. 6 show at Rose Hall in New York. Members of John's Rocket club have first crack at tickets starting today (Aug. 11) via EltonJohn.com.

The artist will kick off a North American tour in support of "The Captain and the Kid" Sept. 15 in Sacramento, Calif.

Here is the track list for "The Captain and the Kid":

"Postcards From Richard Nixon"
"Just Like Noah's Ark"
"Wouldn't Have You Any Other Way (NYC)"
"Tinderbox"
"...And The House Fell Down"
"Blues Never Fade Away"
"The Bridge"
"I Must Have Lost It on the Wind"
"Old '67"
"The Captain and the Kid"

KFOG just played a song from the "local scene" CD by the Bittersweets. Interesting lyrical snippet: "it's been a long time since I swallowed."

WTF?

Fleetwood Mac Star's Children Launch Band

Former guitarist Jeremy Spencer's three kids are releasing an album.

Three children of former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer have launched their own group, despite growing up without hearing their father's music.

Spencer quit the Peter Green-fronted rockers in 1971 in the middle of a tour. Without warning he vanished for five days before police traced him to religious sect the Children Of God.

Spencer started a family in the group's communes and now three of his kids - Koa, Nat and Tally - are releasing their debut album, despite growing up without pop music.

Tally, 25, says, "Obviously we weren't allowed to listen to any music so maybe that's why our music sounds a bit different from anything else we're hearing."

Nat, 32, adds, "It's not very religious music. Some might say it's a little anti-religious."
"Music is the Earth, People are the Flowers, and I am the Hose."

The Sails
« Reply #268 on: August 21, 2006, 12:04:43 AM »
Just ran across this band last week. British, very 60s-retroish. They wear their influences on their collective sleeves (Byrds one minute, Beatles the next, to name just two) but they're quite catchy, thought you guys might like to give a listen:

Don;t know if there's any chance that KFOG would play them but I bet DM would like them.
Let's get right to it.
