for everyone who's seen A Christmas Story a few dozen times...

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/12/08/national/a112619S89.DTL&tsp=1
I don't think I've seen the movie, at least no more than snippets.  But it's quite traditional in my new son-in-law's family.

it's on the favorite Holdiay movie list!  A couple of cute comments on that article, including

"I thought this would be a "Coming of Age" story in the Castro..."

just in case I missed it, can you provide the link to the list again?

My favorite line: after Ralphie tells us "Only I didn't say 'Fudge'.  I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the "F-dash-dash-dash" word! ...  Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his True Medium; He was a Master."

I didn't actually make a list, but I'll do a quick short one here:

Christmas Story
Nat Lampoon Christmas Vacation
It's A Wonderful Life
Elf
Miracle on 34th Street
... maybe Bad Santa?

Some TV shows:
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Charlie Brown Christmas (which ABC Aired last night.   The sound was slightly out of synch... Of course, without the music, it's pretty sparse and primitive).

that's about it, for now..

It was also badly edited -- in 1965 there were less commercials per half-hour on primetime network TV; to show it in a half-hour slot with more commercials they had to take 3-4 minutes out of it. If you'd never seen it before you probably didn't notice, but to those of us who've seen it dozens of times, it looked awful.

This entire site, dedicated to really scary Santa Clauses is worth surfing through, but this one is particularly creepy:

If Santa's mom were a Klingon, he'd look like this. Be sure to read the comments.

Rich Appell, whose radio/chart geek newsletter Hz So Good Gaz & I both read, came up with this clever rewrite of "We Didn't Start the Fire" for the decade of the '00s:

Quote
Harry Potter, Elian, Gladiator, Eminem
Survivor, subway series, Putin, mad cow
Texas 7, Britney Spears, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
Dot com bubble, 11-7 Dow.

Dubya, Gore, J.Lo, West Nile, U.S.S. Cole
“Who Let the Dogs Out,” Florida recount
Napster and Metallica, Shrek, Wikipedia
Condit, eBay, sued by RIAA.

We didn’t ask the writer
No, we didn’t clear it, we just changed the lyrics
You would have thought us brighter
Billy, don’t be hating, ’cause we’re just updating.

Angelina Jolie, Starbucks and Hillary
Paris Hilton, TiVo, stem cell is a no-no
Katie Couric, Kim Jong Il, “Bootylicious,” Dr. Phil
Sex & the City, Rudy Giuliani.

9/11 tragedy, planes hit WTC
Al Queda, Taliban, U.S. in Afghanistan
Al Jazeera, anthrax, Gitmo, Patriot Act
Tora Bora, shoe bomber, Operation Anaconda.

We didn’t start the fire
Well, that song was fine, but that was ’89
We hope that you admire
All that we composed about the double-Os.

iPod, Enron, gay teens at the prom
Iraq, Nickelback, Lakers win with Kobe-Shaq
Spider-Man, Colin Powell, Beltway sniper, Simon Cowell
Hans Blix, Dixie Chicks, “Mission accomplished.“

(uh huh – yeah, right.)

50 Cent, Jack Sparrow, Tonys Hawk and Soprano
SARS, Lord of the Rings, Al and global warming
Power outage, Green River, Rush Limbaugh and painkillers
Martha Stewart in the slammer, Governor Schwarzeneggar.

You see, a lot transpired
Since the year 2000, and we’re merely browsin’
Don’t want to make you tired
We won’t overdo it, more than halfway through it

Abu Ghraib, John Kerry, Jack Bauer, crackberry
Halliburton, e. coli, Red Sox kiss the curse goodbye
Jim McGreevey, Kanye West, Iran does a nuke test
Sponge Bob Square Pants, Lance wins Tour de France.

Tsunami, TomKat, $3-a-gallon gas
New Orleans – washed away
London terror, Tom DeLay.

We didn’t start the fire
Billy Joel, he meant it, when the ‘80s ended
Should our attempt misfire
You don’t like the new groove, watch the old on YouTube.

Condoleezza, AFLAC, Justin brings sexy back
Miley Cyrus, Howard Stern to Sirius
Octomom, Obama, Chris Brown and Rihanna
Bailout, Palin, Jon & Kate Gosselin.

Madoff, flu of swine, Spitzer and Client 9
Geico, Gaza, Guitar Hero, Gaga
Michael Jackson, Twitter tweets, Susan Boyle, Black Eyed Peas
Tiger Woods, Twilight craze, Did I mention Book of Days?

Made it under the wire
Yeah, we tried to cram in everything that happened
Doubtful we’ll get rehired
For the same routine in 20-19

19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 19.

We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No, we didn’t light it but we tried to fight it.

You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

Y'know, the parody is better than the original. (On the other hand, reading it is preferable to listening to it.)
Let's get right to it.

Agreed on both counts.

Well, it's lame, maybe, but you shouldn't get a ticket for it:

Who says you can't get something for nothing?  Now you can get it at Amazon.  Read the customers reviews.
