Yeah, it never fails to send a chill up my spine, even just now rewatching it on YouTube.

I've watched it literally a hundred times at home, and if I ever need a pick-me-up this usually does the trick.

A fine set -- and we avoided Deep Blue Something (I think AL played them in another year recently, but they're "legal" in '96) and Alanis MoreUpset (who is legal in both '95 and '96).

Sorry, WOS from me.  Always seemed ham-fisted to me.  "Oh, I get it!  She's screaming EVERYTHING'S FINE but everything's not fine!!!"

Jars of Clay harmonized well but laid it on a bit thick with the "40 days" thing.  You know you can get metaphors from other sources even if you're a Christian rock band, right?

Never thought about it, but running the melody thru my head I see what you mean. Very simple melody, with a range of about a fifth at most. And hitting the notes does not seem to be a big concern for Mr. Gallagher, so why should any potential karaoke-ers worry about it?

Care to specify? I was listening to a lot of "y'all-ternative" back then and would be curious to know what caught your attention. Bottle Rockets? Old 97s? Scud Mountain Boys? Backsliders? I liked both of the acts you named back then, but as time passed the novelty side of their acts came more to the fore (see also: Southern Culture on the Skids who made no bones about their tongue-in-cheek side), despite the fact that they could play like mofos.
