Al Gore's Macarena deletion gets BOS for me.  That was funny.

LOL.  I loved that too.  Although I would have to give her props for guts if she actually did play the Macarena.

hearing this set makes me realize I ignored a lot of what was current in 96.

I'll dig out my "best of '96" mixtape tonight for comparison -- the LL and Oasis (and the Mike Flowers cover of "Wonderwall" too) were on it, but not a lot else from this set.

EVERYTHING'S  FINE!!!!

I didn't know Tracy Bonham went back this far.  I really like her more recent stuff.  This rocks!

Anybody ever see her with the Blue Man Group?  This is such a totally cool video, I actually have the DVD this is on.

Yeah, it never fails to send a chill up my spine, even just now rewatching it on YouTube.

I've watched it literally a hundred times at home, and if I ever need a pick-me-up this usually does the trick.

A fine set -- and we avoided Deep Blue Something (I think AL played them in another year recently, but they're "legal" in '96) and Alanis MoreUpset (who is legal in both '95 and '96).

Vonnegut is somewhat depressing, especially S-5.  It certainly isn't a happy book.

But it's an amazing one (and the movie just as, if not more so). So I was taken aback that he would dislike it. Dunno what other KV novels he's read.

The only other KV I've read was Breakfast of Champions, which I found infinitely more depressing.  It's not a dis of Vonnegut - he's very good at what he does - it's just not what I needed to read at that particular moment.

Lots of sledgehammers in this set for me, catching on the replay.

Sorry, WOS from me.  Always seemed ham-fisted to me.  "Oh, I get it!  She's screaming EVERYTHING'S FINE but everything's not fine!!!"

Jars of Clay harmonized well but laid it on a bit thick with the "40 days" thing.  You know you can get metaphors from other sources even if you're a Christian rock band, right?

BOS Garbage!  ;D (My other favorite overplayed Hot AC recurrent from this year.)

This was my very second CD (I bought it because I liked "Queer" and "Only Happy When It Rains" and was ecstatic when "Stupid Girl" got released to radio!)

and HM to Cake.

What A/C stations do you listen to that play Oasis and Garbage??

"Wonderwall" might also be the most overdone karaoke song of the '90s - it's tailor-made for people who can't sing.  (I say this as a fan of early Oasis, and of the song.)

Never thought about it, but running the melody thru my head I see what you mean. Very simple melody, with a range of about a fifth at most. And hitting the notes does not seem to be a big concern for Mr. Gallagher, so why should any potential karaoke-ers worry about it?
Let's get right to it.

In addition to the above-mentioned, My '96 mix included:

Primitive Radio Gods
Butthole Surfers ("Pepper")
Nada Surf ("Popular")
Local H ("High-Fivin' Motherf---er")
Imperial Teen ("You're One")
Lush ("Ladykillers")
Blur ("Charmless Man")
No Doubt ("Just A Girl", tho' I could've picked any of their hits)
Crapton (yes, really -- "Change the World")
a bunch of alt-country stuff by the likes of Junior Brown and BR5-49
Fugees ("Killing Me Softly")
a couple by the late lamented satrical group The Foremen
and of course the "Macarena", included for posterity, not because I liked it.

Care to specify? I was listening to a lot of "y'all-ternative" back then and would be curious to know what caught your attention. Bottle Rockets? Old 97s? Scud Mountain Boys? Backsliders? I liked both of the acts you named back then, but as time passed the novelty side of their acts came more to the fore (see also: Southern Culture on the Skids who made no bones about their tongue-in-cheek side), despite the fact that they could play like mofos.

back then I got my alt-country from Sully Roddy's late lamented Sunday night shows (first on KSAN, then on KNEW). The Mavericks were huge faves, obviously, and Steve Earle. Also:

'95

"8 Feet High", Stacey Dean Campbell
"Hello Cruel World", George Ducas

'96

"A Real Country Song", Dale Watson
"Blue", LeAnne Rimes (yes, her first single, when she was channeling Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, before she started doing Diane Warren crap)
"Planet of Love", Mandy Barnett
"Corpus Christi Bay", Johnny Rodriguez (from his comeback album, You Can Say That Again, covering the likes of Lucinda Williams, Dave Alvin, and Robert Earle Keen -- a real find if it's still in print)

'97

"Every Kind of Music", Robert Shafer/Don Dixon
"Inner Redneck", Red Meat
"Every River", Kim Richey
"If My Broken Heart Would Ever Mend", Prairie Oyster
"When Losers Rule The World", the Cicadas (a band featiring Rodney Crowell that sounded to my ears like a countrified Rockpile)
"I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For" (yes, the U2 song, in a bluegrass cover by a woman who sounds a lot like Alison Krauss)
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

BOS Cake, which I think I played at rgMike's "covers party" way back when.
