Burritos in Brooklyn?
« Reply #49 on: July 10, 2010, 06:30:05 PM »
This is for Gaz, and anyone else with an opinion about burritos who's been in the NYC area.  My daughter just flew back to JFK today after a visit, and she almost brought a burrito on the plane with her for a friend.  She says there are no good burritos in NY.  I notice there's Chipotle restaurants in the area, but wondered what you thought about this issue.

There are Benny's Burritos and Harry's Burritos in NYC, both of which call themselves "San Francisco-style Cal-Mex". Benny's has been there for 20 years. and there's also:

Love Benny's in the village!  I get my burrito fix there when I'm in NYC.  They got rid of the "home of the San Francisco burrito" slogan, though.  I tried to show a friend the sign for laughs and it was gone.   :(

Benny's is good (I was there on Pride Sunday), and Chipotle is good (I eat there almost once a week during work shifts), but I wouldn't call either SF burritos.  The difference, I think, lies in the saturated rice and beans that complete the SF style, vs. the lime-sprayed rice (seriously - I've watched the spraying) and anodyne salsas of Chipotle.  Even worse is Qdoba, which seems to have set as a goal being the B- to every Chipotle B on the report card.  After 7.5 years in NYC, I still have not had what I would call a "San Francisco" burrito here.
