Spanish Market

This was a way to buttress its hold on Spanish listeners, who now have two classic Mexican stations in San Jose and one Romantic station.

I'm not sure if I read it here at the club, but this seems to resonate with another article I'd read about how the increase in traditional Mexican music has impacted Tejano music in Texas, pushing Tejano out.

Thanks, Mark, I meant to post ...

I rely on you for this. I tuned into 104.9 on New Years day and was stunned by the absence of recognizable music. Like Mark, I now have a preset I don't know what to do with. 104.9 was right before my 105.3.
Max replaced the KSJO preset.

How about checking out some college radio? That's my usual fall-back when I can't find anything on the commercial end of the dial. You're probably too far south to get KALX (90.7) and KUSF may be spotty (90.3) but you could try KFJC (89.7) from Foothill College or KZSU (90.1) which is Stanford's station. You may not hear much you recognize, but you might run across something you'd like. (And if you hear something you don't dig, try back at different hours and different days--each DJ usually programs their own show, so types of music can vary widely--rock, hip hop, indie, reggae, jazz, who knows? KFJC even has a show on Saturday mornings that's nothing but movie, tv, and broadway soundtracks--the Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack show.
Let's get right to it.

Little Steven's show this week is his annual salute to the Beatles on Ed Sullivan (2/9/64).  His fab opening set included "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", Graham Parker's "Fool's Gold", Badfinger's "Baby Blue", that Strokes song that cops a melodic line from "Mandy" (!) and the Downbeat 5 covering an obscure girl-group tune called "Dum Dum Diddy" (not to be confused with "Doo Wah Diddy").  Check it out on the internet if you missed it Sun nite.

Interesting Ben Fong-Torres column in Sunday's Chron, about local radio ratings. Seems public and listener-supported stations like KQED and KPFA do surprisisngly well (they don't subscribe to Arbitron, so their ratings don't get reported). I never knew this.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/12/PKGU9GINB71.DTL

If KQED is getting between  4 and 5 % of the audience, that could explain why Air America's ratings are rather aneimic, even in a lefty bastion like SF.

Theme set of the Week:

last nite Little Steven played the Arctic Monkeys as his "Coolest Song in the World", and followed that with...

"Monkey Time", Major Lance
"A Little Bit Me...", Monkees
"Planet of the Apes", the Mummies
"One Monkey (Don't Stop No Show)", Honey Cone

Genius.

After hearing Ginger play Joni's "Carey" the other day... what should pop up on KPIG this morning but "A Case of You".  And thus, my new avatar.

Per Ben Fong-Torres' column in today's Chron, Harry O, who has been doing "The Green Hour" Sun mornings on Live 105 for nearly 20 years,  did his last show this morning.

Meant to mention this the other day: Sun nite's Joel Selvin show on The Bone was a tribute to Nicky Hopkins, "the best unknown piano player in rock", sez Selvin.  And he played quite a range of stuff, including the great JA live version of "Volunteers" from Woodstock.

"All right kids, you have seen the heavy groups... now you will hear Morning Maniac Music!  Believe me... it's a new dawn!"

Did he play "Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder," his magnum opus?

More fallout from the takeover of the former Susquehanna properties:

KNBR's Bruce Macgowan (the guy who is always on after the Giants' postgame) gets the ax.

Wonder if any KFOG personalities will be going bye-bye. (If anyone does, let it be Renee.)
Let's get right to it.

just switched over to the Bone (for Little Steven) and heard their new top o' the hour ID: "KSAN, San Mateo -- a Cumulus station".
