Thanks to Little Steven, I now know who The Charms, the Kaiser Chiefs, The Mummies and The Jessica Fletchers are.

Thank you, Little Steven, for giving me something new to listen to.

The "new" KFRC is here...

Sadly, I'm assuming this means no more Dick Bartley.

The Chron's article today about the KFRC switch:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/09/05/DDGFNEHK1N1.DTL

I think the problem is an assumption that people have very narrow tastes, which might be partly correct, but I think a lot of people would appreciate a sprinkling of 50's and 60's along with these other newer songs.  I think the old KFRC was too stuck in the past, but I don't think we need to dump it either.

Listening to the callers who made requests on KFRC and especially on Dick Bartley's show which supposedly skewed even older, demographically, it's clear not all "oldies" listeners are over 50.  The "new" KFRC is actually playing more than a sprinkling of '60s -- the highest-scoring Beatles, Motown and other songs are still in rotation. "Brown-Eyed Girl", for example, despite peaking at #10 back in the day, is one of THE most popular oldies on American radio.

OOO -- I've tuned in to Beatles A-Z just in time for "You Know My Name..."!  Good Evening and welcome to Slaggers...

At least you stuck around long enough (I assume) for "Your Mother Should Know," which is easily in my Beatles Top Five.  (I wish that comfort food would've been more satisfiying, though.)

I had the pleasure of hearing perhaps the Best. Little. Steven. Show. EVER. last nite.  It was a love letter to New York and it was spectacular, featuring the likes of "Wild on the Streets" by Garland Jeffries, which I hadn't heard on the radio since leaving NYC, and much much more. I urge you all -- especially Gaz, since you're actually there -- to check it out on the net

You'll be glad you did.

From the Bay Area Radio website:

"The San Francisco Bay Area Publicity Club, the local alliance of public relations professionals, will announce the winners of the 9th Annual Pubby Awards at an awards ceremony luncheon Wednesday. The Pubbies, which honor excellence in media, will be held at the Argent Hotel in downtown San Francisco.

Among the Pubby nominees for Best Bay Area On-Air Radio Personality are Pete Wilson (KGO/810), Michael Krasny (KQED/88.5), Don Bleu (Star 101.3), Sarah & No Name (Alice@97.3) and Annalisa (KFOG/104.5)."

Sadly, Annalisa lost to Sarah & No Brain.  But Kruk & Kuip won Best Sportscaters.

more cool internet listening:

http://bobshannon.com/

Mr Shannon was a DJ at the late lamented "oldies" WCBS-FM; he's married to Connie T Empress of the Empire State Soul Club.  Interesting shows avail on their site, I'm listening to a "salute to CBGBs right now (scroll down the home page to find it).

I'm into hour 2 of the "CBGBs Salute" -- everything from the Jaynetts to Mink DeVille, including a Richie Valens/Los Lobos "La Bamba Megamix" and (currently) Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World". Wow.

ETA: Plastic Bertrand too! I am the King of the Divan!
