new recommendation from poc:

http://www.kpoo.com

local SF listener-supported radio station, they do a soul show (like Felix Hernandez's Rhythm Revue) on Tue & Thur mornings. On right now and sounding fab.

OH. MY. GAWD!

This station is amazing. Their soul shows are scattered around the schedule (see their website for listings) and what I've heard so far has been astounding.

"JJ on D Radio" is the guy's name and he was on Sat nite from 10p-2a. 2 hours of '70s followed by 2 hours of '60s (guaranteed to be off vinyl 45s, or so he sez).  And the nuggets he dredged up -- Curtis Mayfield, "If there's Hell Below we're All Gonna Go".  Detroit Emeralds, "You Want It You Got It".  The Impressions' very Marvin Gaye-ish "Finally Got Myself Together". And much much more. I had to force myself to turn the radio off at 1:00 and go to sleep.  But he's back on Monday afternoon from Noon to 4 and it WILL be fonky.

Last week I took part in a radio music opinion survey, much like the one Alicat did a few months back. I seem to recall hers was in a large room with a bunch of other people, but mine was an individual test--they gave me a cassette walkman, a tape with bits of about 500 songs (each time), several questionnaires and one of those lovely computer-read test forms (and a #2 pencil). They stuck me in a room by myself and left me to guide the course of SF rock radio.

One thing that differed about this test from others I've take is that, besides rating a song from 1 (hate it a lot) to 5 (one of my faves), there was a separate bubble to mark if you were tired of hearing that song on the radio. I marked that one a LOT. There was also one to mark if you weren't familiar with the song at all. There were maybe 10 that fell into that category for me.

It was given in two parts on two separate days. And I figure either KFOG was running it to try and tweak their playlist, or someone else is trying to figure out what Fogheads are burnt out on and offer an alternative,  because nearly all the songs were ones I've heard on KFOG over the last few years, or in the case of some older tunes, 10@10 staples. And there was a healthy sprinkling of Bob Marley tunes too, several of which got the "tired of" rating from me.  Also a lot of Clapton, Police, Counting Crows, Doors, CCR, Bonnie Raitt, Beatles, etc. I also noticed several instances where someone's cover of a classic tune would be played (like Counting Crows Big Yellow Taxi) and then a hundred or so songs later, I'd hear Joni's version. I tried to pretty much consistently downgrade the cover and pump the original.

When I was done with the second part, I asked if they could tell me who was sponsoring the survey. But the guy at the desk was just an office worker and he said he didn't know. Not sure if I buy that, but in any case, they weren't talking.
Let's get right to it.

Way cool dude.  How does one go about getting chosen for such a thing?  I'd do it in a flash.  From what you described I have to think it was KFOG, the Counting Crows version of "Big Yellow Taxi" is an absolute clincher.

I'm registered with a couple of marketing research companies that do focus groups, and get screening calls about 3-4 times a year, but usually only get chosen to participate maybe once. Usually get paid between $70 and $100 bucks for a couple of hours. This one was $100, but I had to go in twice.

This one was Fleischman Field Research--they're on Sutter here in SF. Go to this page & fill out their form to get in their database & maybe they'll call you too:

right now on KFOG -- that "sick of your lies, tired of my tears" song I was trying to identify recently. Hope Dave back-announces it. Damn it's good.

Sounds a lot like mine. See my previous summary in the SF Music Survey thread in Stream of Consciousness. Instead of a walkman, we had a tape play over loud speakers for the whole room and it was just women. I'm POSITIVE mine was paid for by Bonneville/MAX FM. It was esay money listening to music.

Tones on Tail were goth?

From the fear of being real, to the fear of being really you ...   Livin' it up is a big kick, it's good for you.

Well everyone knows Bauhaus was Goth, so if Love & Rockets were Goth, how could their intermediate incarnation not be?

That being said I don't think L&R were Goth either.

Live 105 is having a "All Things Rock" weekend featuring the "past, present & future of Rock".

So far the nuggets, like "Free Bird", "Whole Lotta Love" & "Light My Fire" have been mixed in with some pretty good new stuff that I haven't heard before.

And anyway the Yankess/Angels game got rained out.

For aficionados of format-switches, 106.9 (the former KEAR, the religious station) is currently "stunting" on its way to a rumored FM Talk format.
