Billy Preston's "Space Race" is cute, but it's no "Outa Space," that is FO SHO.

Well, it's nice to know not EVERYBODY is doing all-Xmas.  I look forward to hearing this via Idaho Sunday morning (I'll be at the Sharks game tonite).

As to "GYBR", it's clearly about a "rent boy" (who came to the big city straight from the farm) being kept by a rich old queen. Whether the boy is gay or just "gay for pay" is open to interpretation.

And I agree about "Ruby Red Dress" -- either she had an abortion or was forced to give the child up. And wouldn't Diana Ross' "Last Time I Saw Him" have made the ideal follow-up to "Ruby" for Ms. Reddy?

I'm really curious about these, which I can't recall:

#18 “CHEAPER TO KEEP HER” – Johnnie Taylor
#17 “WHY ME” – Kris Kristofferson
...
#12 “YOU’RE A SPECIAL PART OF ME” – Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
#11 “ALL I KNOW” – Garfunkel

18: clever languid blues shuffle
17: Calvinist minimal gospel
12: bloody mess with no direction but predictably great vox
11: oversung mild-lyric ballad with astonishingly overblown outro that gets away with it b/c it's Art Fucking Garfunkel and Jimmy Fucking Webb
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

To be clear: They DESERVE to get away with this.  I applaud.

Barry White kicks things off nicely with the indulgently titled "Never NEVER Gonna Give You Up."

Quittin' just ain't his "stick" -- and neither is Yiddish, obviously.

Glad you finally got to hear "All I Know", which I adore, and glad you, er, liked it (?). The whole LP is worth a listen. Instant BOS to Marvin's sublime "Come Get to This". He wanted "to do somethin' freaky to you" years before Leon Haywood did.

BTW this 11/17/73 show is a rerun (yes, I know, they'll all technically reruns, but we heard it during the KFRC "marathon" last month). And your sig quote reminds me of another childhood joke: "What's brown and lays in the street?" Gomer's Pyle.

Casey recounts the woes of klutzy Bobby Goldsboro, who cut his big toe when he walked barefoot over some breakfast cereal that had spilled -- and then hardened overnight -- into the carpet.

What the hell is he eating?

"KRUSTY-Os -- they'll chase the boy in you away!"

WRIH (Worst Rhyme in History) to that "julep/two lips" travesty.

"The ending always comes at last
Endings always come to pass
They come too fast
But they pass too slow"

It's worth noting that this is something of a sledgehammer for me; it was released in late August and instantly got lots of NYC radio play. And I was saying goodbye then to high school friends who were going off to college for the first time, so the above lyric had serious impact.

Chart Oddity of the Week (and TANC, since he figured into the Kristofferson story): at #77 is a version of the Thom Bell/Linda Creed comp "I'm Comin' Home" by... Johnny Mathis! -- a year before the Spinners took it to the Top 40!

I heard half of this set on that Philly station, which condenses the countdown to 2:30 instead of a full 3:00.  But Chico is playing the '73 set again!   >:(

BOS: "Nadia's Theme," just for it striking out-of-placeness and the vividness with which I remember it

WOS: Ritchie Family, "The Best Disco in Town" (if it is, I'm moving)

OMGWTFLOL: Commodores, "Just to Be Close to You" (that spoken-word stuff is SO over the top)

OMGWTFLOL^2: didn't get to hear it here, but Travolta's pathetically sung "Whenever I'm Away From You"

I've got chills. They're multiplyin'. And I'm losing my lunch.
