A couple forgotten gems in the first hour (H&O, Al Green) but having heard a Dec '76 chart during Magic 98's marathon this week that featured more than 3/4 of these songs... I may be otherwise occupied Sat morning.

"they warm and excite us/'cause we have the bright-us" Bet Babs and Paul Williams each blame the other for that line. eeek.

Instant BOS1: H&O sing about hot cars, leather bars and movie stars in their fab, forgotten "Do What You Want...", later covered rather nicely by the Dramatics.

and instant WOS1 Skynyrd's live version of "Freebird".

wow: another one you NEVER hear -- Al Green's "Keep Me Cryin'". BOS2.

VHM Foghat. And now let us flash back to a time before we were sick to death of "Fly Like An Eagle"...

VHM ED&JFC; WOS2 Donny & Marie.

BOS3 Barry in New England; VHM the BeeGees.

BOS4 Doc-tah Byoo-ZAHRD, cherchez-ing a femme or 2.

Proxy of GazWOS: Mary MacGregor, that cheatin' bitch.

Hadn't really intended to stick around past the first hour, but Jose F has another Casey thread going on FB.

Kenny Nowwan -- he wikes dweamin'.

"could be 'Sugar Pie Honey Bunch'..." No, it's "This Song", Mr Idle.

EWF and the Bar-Kays get VHMs for being funky. Ditto the Jacksons.

Posted this on the running FB thread:
Another interesting Aerosmith chart factoid: According to Wiki, Aerosmith had absolutely no charting singles in Europe in the Seventies, EXCEPT for the aforementioned Dream On and Walk This Way re-releases, which hit number ONE in . . . Italy! Ciaaaaaaaaaaao?

My greatest "hit" from the FB thread ("Holy self-indulgence, Batman!" says Robin):

SS: 1977 was a very good year for Fleetwood Mac, top of the world
HTY: And also for their dealer!

Thank you . . . thank you . . . thank YOU!

This week, That '70s Casey visits Jan 12th 1974:

http://www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/01-12-74.pdf

per the folks on the AT40 Geek Board... three songs on this chart mention a fruit in their lyrics. See if you can guess all 3.

And Casey's '80s is from Jan 14th 1984:

Hour 1:  Rock on, put your hands together, and let yo' hair down, bitches!

TO & Dawn are at the end of their faux-vaudeville rope in the Strawberry patch.

BOS (part 1) Isaac Hayes, "Joy (part 1)".

BOS2 Mr Simon's superb "American Tune"

and another: BOS3 Ian Thomas, doing a swell America imitation on "Painted Ladies". He's Dave (SCTV) Thomas' brother, ya know.

Byron MacGregor was 25 when he recorded "Americans"?? He sounds like he's 50. wow.

uber-BOS4 Merle, makin' it thru December. Brilliant.

L&M, at the end of their '50s-nostalgia rope with "My Music". I assume "little Timmy Schmidt" is Timothy B Schmidt of Poco (and later the Eagles).

Cockney git #1: "ah took me wife on a Carribean holiday"
Cockney git #2: "Jamaica?"
Cockey git #1: "No, she wanted to"
VHM Zep, "D'yer Mak'er"

Love Kool & the gang but didn't need to hear "Jungle Boogie" 2 days in a row. VHM the Stylistics with one of their rare uptempo numbers.

Worst. Extra. EVAH: that dreadful remake of "Last Kiss" by Wednesday.

Hour 2: OMGWTFLOL -- Cheech & Chong's "Sister Mary Elephant".

VHM Staples; WOS Grand Funk.

BOS5 Al Green; BOS6 Ree-Ree does Stevie. Seriously, how were people so oblivious to how *gay* EJ's "GYBR" was? Jeezus.

Jump up, baby brotha!

awww: Donny's cover of "When I Fall in Love" is rather sweet, actually. And it's not on the best-of that I have. VHM.

and now some farm boy teaches it all to Ruby Red Dress. Nice euphemism.

This is my favorite kind of chart.  A little bit of everything: funk, soul, country, novelty, comedy, and pop of various shades.  Co-BOS to the back-to-back "American Tune" and "Painted Ladies."
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

VHM "Hello It's Me."  I've been on a bit of a Rundgren kick since hearing H&O's "Wait for Me" a week or so ago.

VHM to the Carpenters and, in Karen's words at the time, "that damn country song."

Casey, on Elton's sartorial elegance: "Whatever happened to Mrs. Miller?"  TANC: I was listening to her eviscerations of "Downtown" and "A Lover's Concerto" this week!

That Chuck Eddy "worst covers" list was great, BTW. You can certainly see the influence of Christgau on his style.

ETA: and here's yer "Seasons in the Sun".

Haha, be careful what you ask for!  At least it wasn't the B-side, "Put the Bone In" (!).
