oh Charlene, your "subtle whoring" is really boring.  VHM Karla Bonoff's sweet "Personally" and OMGWTF to the Smurf voices on "Murphy's Law", a trend that would soon overstay its welcome.

Dionne W thinks she and Johnny Mathis are "Friends in Love". Er... Dionne, honey, there's a reason why Johnny's nickname is "the African queen".

WOSes Foreigner, Martha Motel and Kansas.

I don't remember Sheena E's "When He Shines" at all. Sample lyric:

Sometimes a tramp
Sometimes a dude
He changes colour just like a chameleon
Who can't find the mood

Yeesh.

WOS4 Loverboy. WTF-of-the-Week: S&G's live-in-Central Park version of "Wake Up Little Suzie" -- can't believe this even charted much less made the Top 40.

Completely forgettable follow-ups to big hits back-to-back: Frankie & the Knockouts' "Without You" and Donnie Iris' "My Girl"

My fantasy is never having to hear "Fantasy" again. WOS5 Aldo Nova.

Oddity of the week: Charlie Daniels' "Still in Saigon", his last gasp of relevance before becoming a sad parody of a redneck.

VHM Juice Newton, "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard On Me"... Heh-heh, she said "hard-on"!

BOS Queen's forgotten "Body Language", just because. BOS2 Ms Flack's lovely movie theme song, "Making Love"  But, unfortunate segue of the day: "Making Love" is followed by "Did it in a Minute". Er...

And big BOS3 Deniece Williams' wonderful remake of "Gonna Take a Miracle"

Was sitting in a brewpub in McMinnville last night & heard a good chunk of a Summer '76 ATF that included Silly Love Songs and You Should Be Dancin', among others. No idea if it was on radio, Sirius/XM, or what.
Let's get right to it.

And the '80s version is from June 5th 1982

http://www.oldradioshows.com/at40/060582.html

Too bad I'll be out of town; several NTMs and long-forgottens in this set, including 5/6 of the opening:

40:    PERSONALLY – KARLA BONOFF
39:    MURPHY’S LAW - CHERI
38:    FRIENDS IN LOVE – DIONNE WARWICK AND JOHNNY MATHIS
37:    FORGET ME NOTS – PATRICE RUSHEN
36:    I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START – EDDIE RABBITT
35:    BREAK IT UP - FOREIGNER

'77, on the other hand, can be safely ignored; we just heard most of those a few weeks ago.

Considering it's Johnny Mathis, I don't think the "Friends in Love is between Dionne and himself.

Please don't ever pair those two images together again.

I bet you just "love" Jefferson Starship and Steve Perry that are part of the top 40 that week in 1984, Mike.  ;)

The Starship tune I barely remember but the perry is an all-time HFH for me. But his *other* hit that year, "Foolish Heart" is just lovely and sadly underplayed.

Diana Ross's retooling of "Reach Out, I'll Be There," seemingly modeled after her "Ain't No Mountain," is NTM.  It never really catches fire.

WOS: Tom Jones' lost and misguided take on "Puppet Man," with horribly screechy femvox battling him the whole way.

That's a decent 84 chart.  Oh Sherrie is much maligned, but I've always liked it, despite the opening screams "Well you shoulda been gonnnne!" -- I agree that's waay over the top, those lines make me cringe just a tad -- but the verse and chorus are nice to me.     Waddy Wachtel, the session guitarist for hire on the song, plays a really simple solo, and he took crap for that.  heh, I guess lots of folks just don't like that song, and I can see why...   :)
