except for a couple of debuts (Enchantment, VH and the pre-Golden Girls incarnation of "Thank You For Being a Friend"), just about every song was in the '78 show we heard a month ago.

'80 is more interesting: the Knack's shameless "Sharona" knockoff, "Baby Talks Dirty", Peaches & Herb's shameless "Reunited" knockoff "I Pledge My Love", Dr Hook's shameless BeeGees rip "Sexy Eyes" and -- voila! ---"An American Dream"!

The Knack seemed like they just used the same beat for both songs. I could have sung along (badly) replacing Baby Talks Dirty with My Sharona.

Other NTMs this week: Elvis' "I Got a Thing About Ya Baby" (were there ever rumors about his, um, thing?); Charlie Rich's "There Won't Be Anymore" (the lesser half of his twin-spin); and Lamont Dozier's precursor to Tricky Dick's shit, "Tryin' to Hold On to My Woman."  Glad I was up early for this one!

Agreed, and I 'd like to re-iterate that (a) "Keep on Singing" rips off the melody of "RockNRoll Lullabye" and (b) Sammy Jo's "Tell Me A Lie" is a lovely bit of Nashville songcraft -- I'd've loved for Gladys to have covered that one.  That Charlie Rich song "There Won't Be..." was a from-the-vaults re-release by his old label, trying to capitalize on the success of "Most Beautiful Girl".
