One comment on the AT40 "Top 40 of 1976": Casey re-told the story of how Andrea True came to record "More More More" in Jamaica, but changed the reference to her (*ahem*) "nightclub act" and instead said she was in Jamaica "producing a TV commercial". Er... WHAT??

I know she did porn, but The Andrea True wikipedia entry reaffirms that "commercial" story:

"During her heyday as a porn actress, True was hired by a real estate business in Jamaica to appear in their commercial ads. During her stay on Jamaica, a political crisis gripped the island, and no one was allowed to leave with any money. Not wanting to lose her hard-earned pay, True asked her friend, record producer Gregg Diamond, to travel to the island and produce a track for her, which she would finance locally. Diamond arrived with a composition in hand, to which True added lyrics. The result of their collaboration was "More, More, More."

so that's just a spin..?  was she really there to film another adult movie?  was it called "Welcome To jamaica, Have A Nice Day"

Thanks, TC -- news to me. I was referring to the fact that porn stars don't make money from the films themselves, but from "personal appearances" (e.g., performing at places like the Mitchell Brothers in SF) and when Casey originally referred to her "nightclub act" I assumed it was a euphemism for, er, nightclub "acts" har har. Guess this was a case of "More More More" being less.

Haha, I recognize that punchline!

Not a real big Helen Reddy fan but "Angie Baby" has some of the most wild, cryptic lyrics ever for a #1 song. A guilty pleasure for sure.

You live your life in the songs you hear
On the rock and roll radio
And when a young girl doesn't have any friends
That's a really nice place to go
Folks hoping you'd turn out cool
But they had to take you outta school
You're a little touched you know, Angie Baby

Lovers appear in your room each night
And they whirl you across the floor
But they always seem to fade away
When your daddy taps on your door
Angie girl, are you all right
Tell the radio good-night
All alone once more, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe

Stopping at her house is a neighbor boy
With evil on his mind
'Cause he's been peeking in Angie's room
At night through her window blind
I see your folks have gone away
Would you dance with me today
I'll show you how to have a good time, Angie Baby

When he walks in her room,
He feels confused like he's walked into a play
And the music's so loud it spins him around
'Til his soul has lost its way
And as she turns the volume down
He's getting smaller with the sound
It seems to pull him off the ground
Toward the radio he's bound never to be found

The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain
Radio by your side, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe
Well, maybe

Heh!  I loved this chart through and through.  The Elvis and Paul Davis tunes were NTM, as was the Guess Who, sounding kinda like Foreigner on "Dancin' Fool."

It's cheezy '70s synth heaven, as Billy Preston leads off with his umpteenth "Outta-Space" retread, "Struttin'", followed by Billy Joel's "The Entertainer" -- he's played all kinds o' palaces/and laid all kinds o' girls. I cannot tell you how much I loved this song at the time (saw him at Lincoln Center when the LP came out), and how crushed I was that it didn't get higher than #34. "Like another can o' beans", indeed -- and he wouldn't make the Hot 100 again until "Just The Way You Are" (!)

And here's Elvis, workin' on a T-bone steak, alla carty in "Promised Land". Interestingly, JT also covered this Chuck Berry tune in '74, but the LP, Walking Man, produced no charted singles.

DUUUUDE! "Freeeebiiiiiirrrrrd"!  Well, at least it ain't "Sweet Home Alabummer".  We know how I feel about overplayed Skynyrd, and lawd knows ah cain't change.

But lawd, Love Unltd's "I Belong To You" is a great lost gem. BOS1.

I love it when Casey gives one of his "this song is gonna be big" intros to a chart disappointment -- he did it earlier with Billy Preston's "Struttin'", which only got to #22, and now he does it with Billy "Crash" Craddock's "Ruby Baby" remake, which unbeknownst to Casey will stall out at #33.

VHM Barbara Mason's "From his Woman to You", one of the great answer records of all time and one of the most successful.  (It's the answer to Shirley Brown's "Woman to Woman".)

BOS2 Gladys, "I Feel a Song In My Heart", which deserved to be a much bigger hit. "He makes me feel just like a woman -- something that YOU could nevah do!"  Well, that's tellin' him, honey.

Damn, Gaz you're right about this Guess Who tune sounding Foreigner-ish, 2 years before their debut. And -- of course! -- WOS Disco Texx.

I was quite pissed when Mac Davis ended up having the (truncated) hit version of "Rock'N'Roll (I Gave You The Best Years of My Life)" -- the orig by Kevin Johnson was a prog-FM turntable hit in NYC the year before, tho' it stalled at #73.  At least the Terry Jacks version bombed.  ;)

It's an early-disco fest in the middle of the chart:  VHMs to Carol Douglas, proving that songwriting veterans Cook/Greenaway/Cook can do anything with "Doctor's Orders"; Ms. Gaynor disco-izing "Never Can Say Goodbye"; and the Three Degrees going "Hoo.... Hah..." and then turning around and facing the other way.

Many precious moments in that set.  Casey really loved Monti Rock, eh?
