clichés contextualized

I know that Gaz is a Rufus Wainwright fan, so maybe he can explain why this is supposed to be a good idea:

I mean, WTF?

At school, we're supposed to admonish kids who use the "that's so gay" phrase.  Yes, when these homophobic, racist kids say that, it's not usually a nice thing.  In the comments to people were making about this concert, the same phrase is used, and it seems more appropriate.  Know what I'm trying to say?

Yes, absolutely.

The folks discussing the concert are using the phrase literally, because it IS, like, the gayest thing ever.  To kids the phrase is an abstraction that means "bad", "gross", or a variety of other things.

Not a big fan, actually -- I loved "April Fools" and like many of his melodies, but his voice doesn't do much for me and his divatude is tedious.  His ego being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised if this idea was born out of the relative commercial failures of Want One and Want Two: "They thought those albums were too gay?  They haven't seen NOTHING yet!"

Then again, maybe he just loves the songs.  Or then again again, maybe this is all just to piss Daddy off.  (Loudon and Rufus, they don't get along so well.)

actually, Lorna was IN the show, doing a duet of "After You've Gone" with La Rufus.  His sister and mom (Kate McGarrigle) pitched in too.  Got a rave in the Times today -- "a tour de force of politically empowering performance art".

Whatever.

Dragged my usher duds out of mothballs Saturday night to work the Zappa Plays Zappa show at the Warfield, and man, am I glad I did. A thoroughly great performance encompassing a wide swath of Frank's career. The band was led by his eldest son Dweezil, and besides a few featured players from Zappa bands of yore (Napoleon Murphy Brock, Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, and a surprise guest appearance from Warren Cucurullo), was entirely made up of young unknowns who all played like motherf***kers (which was Frank's m.o. for drafting musicians too). They hit both the weird, funny stuff (Don't Eat Yellow Snow, Montana) and the cerebral, highly technical pieces such as Inca Roads and Black Page and Florentine Pogen. And yes, they played Peaches En Regalia, too. Great, great show, which, from Dweezil's comments toward the end, I gather they're going to continue touring periodically, learning new tunes and bringing in other Zappa alumni to guest. I'd love it if they got Flo & Eddie to reprise Just Another Band from LA.
Let's get right to it.

I didn't know what that meant either, so here from Wikipedia:

Cuccurullo, long known to fans to have a vigorous and exhibitionist personality, took the plunge into adult print in 2000, appearing in a nude photo spread in Brazilian gay publication, G magazine.

In July of 2001, he relaunched his fan club website, adding additional members-only sections that included sexually explicit material, music downloads, a chat room, Q&A section, and message board. Later that year, he became rather well-known for creating the "Rock Rod," a self-modeled dildo that sold through the manufacturer's website and in adult stores.

In the summer of 2002, he purchased a Santa Monica, California, Italian restaurant called Via Veneto. It has become a Los Angeles-area hotspot and a favorite with celebrities. Around the same time as the restaurant purchase, he became involved with a Vietnamese woman. Shortly after this, he decided to remove all adult material from his website.

Late in the summer of 2003, he experienced a spiritual epiphany after a serious illness and returned to focusing on music full time. His recent projects, while still mostly guitar-based, are designed to be a trip through diverse musical styles and his new views on life. Collaborating with a variety of partners, he has three as-yet-unreleased projects: a concept album titled N'Liten Up, Chicanery (with vocalist Neil Carlill), and Playing With Tongues, a musical reunion with drummer Terry Bozzio.

I didn't realized he'd renounced that phase, or that it was that far in the past.  When I heard about this recently, I was under the impression that it was au courant.

Cynthia Plastercaster is sitting on a gold mine.

Although not literally, one hopes.
Let's get right to it.
