so we've had "Movie Monday", "Funny Friday" and now "Wordless Wednesday". What's next? "Thirsty Thursday"?

oh those radio marketing folks with their alliteration. One tried and true example is Two-Fer Tuesdays ... and of course 107.7 The Bone features Ta-Ta Tuesdays... :-\

I seem to recall that KINK in Portland, when they did 10@10, did "Theme Thursday", where you had to guess the theme (sort of a "My 10 Songs" thing).
-
This may have been the most Morey-like set Annalisa's done in the 2 1/2 months she's been on the job. Even the bonus track was a Dave fave (and probably a bigger K than anything else she played): Talk Talk by (of course) Talk Talk.
Yesterday's set was also kinda Dave-ish (except for the welcome Mink DeVille bustout). I hope the suits haven't been on AL's case for being too obscure. The instrumental set tomorrow will be interesting. I sent her some never-played-by-Dave suggestions:
Herbie Hancock: "Rockit"
Harold Faltermeyer: "Axel F" (from "Beverly Hills Cop")
Focus: "Sylvia"
They Might Be Giants: "Dog on Fire" (aka the closing theme from "The Daily Show" -- not sure how hard that is to find)
Mike Post, "Hill Street Blues"
I made a suggestion as well, one that Dave played just once, but I'm keepin' it a secret until tomorrow.
Moving this over from Tuesday's '82 thread:
Had a note back from AL that she'd found my suggestion "in the closet" so here's hoping it makes an appearance.
I'm always surprised how often I get responses back from her, even for just a Best of Set vote. Not every time, but at least once a week. The woman's an e-mailing machine, I tellya.
-
Of course! we begin with Les Paul! AL, I (heart) you! BOS1, tho' a 10-way tie is a possibility today.
-
Bustout #1, both artist and song, Les Paul "Caravan". Nice way to slip in a tribute to Mr. Polfuss, there, AL.
-
A very tasty start with Les Paul doing "Caravan". I've never heard this before, and I'm a big fan of "Caravan".
-
This intro...is this Booker T. & the MG's? Time is Tight? TANC--I'd never heard this intro before, until we watched Respect: The Stax Records Story last Friday night (a pretty good doc, btw) and it was included there. Now here it is again.
This doesn't quite sound like the original recording of TiT that I'm used to.
-
never heard this intro to Time is Tight --
or is this Hip Hug Her?
-
This intro...is this Booker T. & the MG's? Time is Tight?
an alternate take, it would seem. Time is... Tighter. BOS2
-

I'd never heard the intro before. Dang, you changed your post before I could fix it! TisT!
I'm hearing some horrible artifacts on this. Are you?
ETA: Wow, very different version.
-

This weird bridge part confirms it. Not the original performance.
-
BOS to Les Paul... and Booker T and the MGs
-
Wow, BOS for Euphoria. I didn't think I'd ever hear this of KFrOG. They're a standby on RadioParadise.
-
isn't this the incidental muzak we hear on the stream every once in a while? It's very psuedo-NewAge (rhymes with "sewage")
-

this was in very heavy KFOG rotation when it was new -- I got quite sick of it, actually. But it's been a while, so VHM.

I was thinking the same thing. I knew I'd heard this, couldn't remember where. And regretfully we don't hear this sort of stuff any more; now it's all Berkeley Rep ads and Danica Patrick signing some guy's boobs.

Really? I guess that just goes to show that I haven't been listening to the radio for several years.
-
Back into more standard KFOGgery with Joe Satriani. I don't really dig this.
-
Satriani continues the sorta mellow, dreamlike vibe.
-
I didn't make a request, but I'm hoping for Billy Preston's Outta Space
-
Satriani continues the sorta mellow, dreamlike vibe.
Two out of four that appeared in previous Strictly Instrumental sets (assuming the alternate Time is Tight counts).
-
BOS for the KFOG staple Eric Johnson. I've always thought of him as a more melodic Joe Satriani.

Eric Johnson? Oughta be a law against playing him and Satriani back-to-back.
-
And if that weren't enough guitar wank, here's the pseudo-Satriani. (Eric Johnson, for those of you following along at home.)

I'll bet most Fogheads can't tell 'em apart ;)
-
this guy can wield an axe, but it's kinda blending into the Joe Satrionics we just heard.
-
BOS3 to
Raisin Grazing In The Grass
-
Real BOS for Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the Grass", not to mention Bruce Dickinson!
It's a gas, baby! Can you dig it?
-
always, always a BOS(3) for Mr Masakela. Suddenly it's July of '68, it's hot and humid and there's no air conditioning.
-
This set is hewing pretty close to Morey territory. Dave never played Grazing in the Grass in a Strictly Instrumental set, but lord knows we heard it in plenty of '68 sets.
And is this Herb Alpert? So we've gone from guitar whizzes to trumpet tunes? Maynard Ferguson next?
-
BOS4 and proxy-of-Gaz, Herb Alpert
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z45JCQyg3U8/Rngi1dwFKLI/AAAAAAAAAFo/hChRGS_lmSo/s400/herb%2Brise.jpg)
always thought this was Herb saying "screw you, Chuck Mangione!" -- CM's "Feels So Good" was a hit on Alpert's label the year before. But "Rise", er, rose higher.
-
Is this Herb Alpert's "Rise"? Sounding good, and very Billy Preston-like on the piano.
Hey, an extra-funky interlude! I don't remember that part.
ETA: I wonder if he was chagrined that this was such a big hit. The trumpet part is really the weakest part of the whole song, and doesn't show him off much.
-

it's the loooooooooooooooooooong version! I think there was a 12"" mix, actually

Sounds like we're gettin' the l-o-o-o-o-o-n-g version. Digging the slinky guitar part that's weaving thru the background on this track. Serious BOS potential here, unless my request turns up in the next four songs.
-
Dick Dale! And it's not Miserlou...or is it?
ETA: Well, I guess it is after all. Another alternate take, as with the Booker T. But this one cooks!
-
Herp Alpert and Rise -- I will forever equate this song to Luke and Laura and General Hospital in whichever summer this was .. 78? 79?
-
back to the gee-tar. Dick Dale, I'm assuming.
-

Laura made Luke "rise", heh heh.
-
SRV Jeff Beck, of course. Well, this was a pleasant set, if a bit snoozy. Nothing really earth-shattering, bustout-wise (read: none of my requests got played).
-
I'm not a Jeff Beck fan, but this, "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" (right?) is one of my two favorites, along with "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", which would be great to hear here.
-
A set long on guitar soloists. See, we could have just played this early and dispensed with the Satriani and Johnson songs altogether--this one's got more technique and soul than both of those put together. BOS2 Jeff Beck.
-

Yep, exactly. This is the tune that he did with Aussie bass wunderkind Tal Wilkenfeld that was posted somewhere here a few months back.

When I first moved here, I worked with a youngish guy who loved Satriani. When I told him JS sounded a lot like Jeff Beck, he said (you're way ahead of me) "Who's Jeff Beck?"
BOS5/proxy of Geoff, ABB, "IMOER". This really *has* been on the mellow side today.
-
Oooh, strong finish with Allman Brothers' "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". A great tune that's fun to play.
-
BOS to a strictly instrumental Katrina, "Cause We Have Ended As Lovers." I will never tire of this.
VHM, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". A buddy of mine made it out to see Dickie Betts at Slims Monday, said it was fab.

is it over already? oh well, some good, some not so good.
I'm curious what everyone's requests might have been?

Not sure if this is tune #10 or not--we may have one yet to go. But a very strong contender nonetheless. And a bustout as well, as far as the DB goes.
ETA: Guess I better start practicing counting to 10. ;)

mine are on the first page of this thread. DAMN! the Sound did '65 today!

Bad stream compression artifacts on this one too.

hrm... wonder who AL was in the back seat of that car with... ;)
-
Stevie Wonder wrote "Cause..."? I had no idea.

Robert Novak?
That might get a rise out of some here!

I've been swamped at work and did not know she was taking requests -- if I had known, I would have requested "Whammer Jammer", which would have added a little energy to the set.

My request was Mongonucleosis, by Chicago. Dave played it once about 4 years ago in a SI set. A kinda funky, Latinesque piece with lots of percusssion, a cool horn part and a great groove.

AL's sets (even with years) are often conceptual, it seems to me -- about an overall sound, which is something Dave didn't really do. Next instrumental set could be latin-flavored, and then we'll get your request, plus Santana, Deodato...

Good point. Seemed like this set was mostly about great guitar tunes, with a short horn-influenced interlude in the middle there. Pretty nice set in any case. I was distracted during the backsell--what got Best of Set?
ETA: I'll have to hang around for the Bonus track--curious which direction she'll take that with her suggestions.

and it's.... Zappa. Cue the complaining Fogheads!
(other choices were "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles, and SRV.)

Jeff Beck "in a landslide".
-
I hope someone voted for ABB

2. Booker T & the MGs - Time is Tight (alternate take)
3. Euphoria - Delirium
4. Joe Satriani - Flying in a Blue Dream
5. Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
6. Hugh Masekela - Grazing in the Grass
7. Herb Alpert - Rise
8. Dick Dale - Misirlou (alternate take)
9. Jeff Beck - Cause We've Ended as Lovers

BONUS TRACK (Jason in SF): Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia
-
BOS "Delirium" by Euphoria, if for no other reason than I now know that it's not "Euphoria" by Delirium
-
Missed it this morning but just caught it & was happy to hear one of my requests ;D Herb Alpert - Rise BOS.
VHM's to Satriani and Euphoria. On a side note, there also is a song by Delerium called "Euphoria (Firefly)"...and has anyone else heard the Phil Roy song that uses "Delerium"...called "Undeniably Human"?

Well, glad one of us got a request in then. Both Mike and I struck out, not sure if anyone else entered a suggestion.

I seem to recall KFOG playing that too. Or maybe it was KPIG.
