Title: 25 January 2008--it's 1972
Post by: mshray on January 25, 2008, 09:20:36 AM
Heard the promo last night.

We don't need to hear "Metal Guru" or "All The Young Dudes" any time soon, but not too many other Katrinas in '72.

ETA:  I do hope it's a soul-ful set - Al Green can be counted on (Dave has played 5 diff. tracks by him in my Db for '72), and I wouldn't mind hearing Cornelius Bros. and Sister Rose, Bill Withers, Donnie Elbert, O'Jays, Stylistics, Spinners, etc.

Oh, we could do without "Brandy" or either of Badfinger's hits.

We just did '72 three weeks ago; this must be some sort of special B-day request.

Oh, we could do without "Brandy" or either of Badfinger's hits.

In the sense that they get plentiful classic rock airplay, sure, but none of them is even close to a 10@10 Katrina (and Day After Day has only shown up in '71 sets).

And we also visited on December 21, so that means we've been to '72 three times in just over a month. Amazing. (I think the last one was a b-day request, so maybe this is just getting back on schedule.)

Nope, I don't thing we've gotten *that* anal yet. But you're right--the Phil & Jane clip is a frequent flyer.

sadly, no -- we rely on memory for those. We call overplayed newsclips "Sallys" (after Sally Field's Oscar clip), just as overplayed songs are "Katrinas" (for Katrina & the Waves, whose "Walking on Sunshine" was once heard in nearly every 1985 set).  But check out the 10@10 Glossary for more.

Love the Reagan/Wallace clip.  As a friend said at the time, "Hmmm... Abraham, Martin, John... and GEORGE???"

Heading into Soul territory--and I'm pretty sure it's a first-timer at that! 992 Arguments--ah, that Philly sound!

That was a pretty representatitve 72 set for me.

Meanwhile, here's a strange item in the news:
16 year-old might have planned to crash into Hannah Montana concert.

A 16 year-old boy has been arrested, foiling his plans to hijack a commercial jet-liner and commit suicide, according to what an FBI spokesman told CNN on Thursday.

The teen was arrested in a Nashville, Tennessee airport after flying out from Los Angeles, California on Tuesday. It appears the boy was planning on hijacking a plane going to Louisiana, where authorities believe he once lived.

According to two CNN affiliates the boy was planning on crashing the plane into a Hannah Montana concert being held in Lafayette, Louisiana being held tonight at the Lafayette Cajundome. FBI spokesman, George Bolds, does not know if the concert was the target or part of the boy’s plot.

The teen had handcuffs, duct tape, and some kind of rope or yarn in his possession, which he planned on using to overpower the crew on his flight to Louisiana. How the police became aware of the teen’s alleged plan is not known.

He is being held in a juvenile detention center in Davidson County and may face charges of felony terrorism.

oops... my bad. I got The Thing With 2 Heads confused with 1971's similar The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant. Casey's in the latter (with Bruce Dern). Two 2-headed horror movies within a year -- who'd'a thunk it?

Apropos of nothing to do with this set, but it's time for me to go home and it's *still* effing raining outside--I swear it has not stopped dumping all goddamn day. Another day or two of this and we're going to see some serious landslides and such--and let's not even think about the folks along the Russian River.

I work in the center of the school, with no windows, and don't know much during the day, but I heard rain pelting on the ductwork connected to the fume hood today, and thought that a bit unusual!  Definitely a wet one!

well-hung and snow-white tan. Wha?

Dave's def. getting his glam on early--wonder if we'll have any other contributions from any of Bowie's compatriots?

And no sooner said than done--it's the Dooods!

I need TV, but I got T Rex!

YOU. WILL. NOT. BELIEVE. THIS.

I just got home about 15 minutes ago.  Launched the player while checking out some emails.  One of the notes: My brother's updated his MySpace page.  I haven't checked it out in a while.  So I pop by, and see he's gotten a lot of posted messages since the New Year.  I scroll down.

And Just. As. This. Song. starts, I get to this post:

Jamason ( Jan 9 2008 12:14 AM ) : I need TV when i got........T.REX....

Wow.

OMG! I was thisclose to predicting "Easy Living" -- I swear!  BOS the Heep.

I have to BOS this.  I'd forgotten how strong it was.  (There's a post-fame Turtles song, "Goodbye Surprise," that sounds rather like the Heep.  Highly recommended.)

VHM Hanoi Jane.  But a big BOS2 Mark-Almond "The City". fake-jazz at its finest.

No one, including good ol' Razsty, ever explained to me what distinguishes "fake jazz" from the real thing.

Does your DB track the frequency of news bits and such?  I've heard that Jane clip several times before.

Nope, I don't thing we've gotten *that* anal yet. But you're right--the Phil & Jane clip is a frequent flyer.

Although Dave usually extends it to her response admonishing him for his lack of tact.

PS: Welcome, Wayback!  I haven't said howdy yet.  I'm the guy who holds down the club on the East Coast.  (San Franciscan by adoption who moved to NYC 5 years ago.)

sadly, no -- we rely on memory for those.

I'm nevertheless still annoyed that Reagan got to go senile before I could have my 1992 arguments with him.
