"Welcome To The Grand Sellout Illusion"

Well it's not like they were great artistes before that LP...  It's actually a great example of how a cheezily commercial album can be a good thing.

A concept or next artist, Mr Joel, is quite familiar with.

BOS to "Love Is the Answer," though I always find it odd that we hear Todd's non-hit version so much more often than ED&JFC's Top 10 reading of it.

I liked them a lot already by this time, and they were quite big in the Midwest generally.  Grand Illusion wasn't horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but it presaged Pieces of Eight & everything that came later, which was horrible.

Nugent is a whole bundle of contradictions, it's a wonder he doesn't just spontaneously combust.  I agree that he is a reactioanry whacko politically, yet he is also a drug- & alcohol-free dedicated family man in a line of work where that's nearly unheard of.  Very contradictory guy, all of which I try not to think of when I listen to Double Live Gonzo.

I have probably said this before, but first and foremost he's an astute marketer who tapped into a demo that had been long ignored. Early FM rock radio and the jocks who populated it often made the assumption that everyone in the audience was left-of-center, anti-war, pro-choice etc, because why else would they be listening to this music?  But of course a lot of male hard-core rock fans are quite right-wing.  Nugent recognized that and aimed straight at them and the rest is history.

and a VHM to "On & On", with apologies to Gaz, whose hatred of Stephen Bishop is a constant vexation to me.
