Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure into The Kinks "Celluloid Heroes"
Everybody's in Show-Biz is one of the best Kink's albums ever.
It's a good album, but I'd venture that four of the five albums that preceded it (Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround, and Muswell Hillbillies) are all better, more cohesive works. The fact that it's got both original studio material and live versions of previously released songs somehow detracts from its overall impact, at least for me. I like both parts; I just think I'd have a better reaction if they'd been released separately.
I was going to say one of the last great Kink's albums, but I like
Preservation Act 1, and I
haven't heard
Preservation Act 2, which I should at least give a chance before I slag it.
But pretty much everything after that is mediocre at best, and it's just sad when compared to
their earlier work. It doesn't help that their later hits are extremely overexposed. I'm ready
to knock that damn Palais down myself, or build another one, whatever it takes -- just as long
as he stops singing about it.
