My Valentine's Day set:

  5. Peggy Lee - Till There Was You

just getting around to this set. As I mentioned during the Beatles set, this is one of my fave showtunes of all time, and TANC The Music Man was on TCM last nite.

of the cuts from Duke Williams and the Extremes, Jay Berliner, and Herbie Mann; and
Jeff Jank at Stones Throw Records for the heads up to the cuts from James Reese and
the Progressions and Shawn Lee's Incredible Tabla Band (not to mention some funk

2nd attempt at Strictly Instrumental:

  6. The Pretenders - In The Sticks (per RGMike)

I've always thought this one sounded like the theme from F Troop.

and this whole set was, of course, Fab. Yoo. Luss.  I've been working on a couple of all-instrumental mix CDs (they're mapped out, just haven't had time to burn them) and there's at least 6 songs here that are on one or the other (including the orig "Apache").  Next time: "Bongo Rock".

Another suggestion for the next Strictly Instrumental: Nicky Hopkins, "Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder"

Knocking this one off before the weekend... a fifth visit to 1980:

 1. Devo - Freedom Of Choice
 2. The Pretenders - Tattooed Love Boys
 3. The Motors - Love And Loneliness
 4. Vaughan Mason & Crew - Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll (Part I & II) (per RGMike)
(TV: Dallas - Who Shot J.R.?)
 5. Mink DeVille - Mazurka
 6. Professor Longhair - Crawfish Fiesta (sounds like "Rum And Coke" to my ears)
(News: Macca released from Japanese prison)
 7. Paul McCartney - Frozen Jap
(Sports: USA Olympic hockey miracle)
 8. Robert Palmer - Sulky Girl
 9. Steely Dan - Glamour Profession
(Movie: Airplane!)
10. Talking Heads - The Great Curve (per urth)

https://soundcloud.com/capnjack-1/142-10-10-1980

Since I didn't hear this when it aired, reading how the first three tracks were given rave reviews,
I kept the first three tracks intact; kept the artists the same for the final two tracks but switched
the tracks to lesser heard numbers; and filled the rest of the set with other tracks (courtesy of
some suggestions by RGMike and urth and from my recent "strictly instrumental" set).  Voila!
Let me know what you think of this revision!

 7. Paul McCartney - Frozen Jap

Agreed on the Prof Longhair.  And I'd never heard the Macca track before.  Fab stuff as always!

Given that Renee gave us a "rum afterglow" '97 set today, to placate RGMike, I present my fifth visit to 1968:

 1. Tom Jones - Get Ready
 2. Paul Mauriat - Love Is Blue
(Commercial: Oreo)
 3. Herb Alpert - This Guy's In Love With You
 4. Hugh Masekela - Grazing In The Grass
(Commercial: Things Go Better With Coke - Gladys Knight & The Pips)
 5. Spanky And Our Gang - Echoes (Everybody's Talkin')
 6. Cliff Nobles & Co. - Love Is All Right (aka "The Horse" with vocals)
 7. Mason Williams - Classical Gas
 8. The Beatles - The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
(Commercial: Open a bottle of Sprite and spring breaks loose)
 9. Nilsson - Good Old Desk
10. Young-Holt Unlimited - Soulful Strut
11. Glen Campbell - Kelli Hoedown
(Commercial: Pepsi pours it on)
12. Engelbert Humperdinck - By The Time I Get To Phoenix
13. Hugo Montenegro, His Orchestra And Chorus - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
14. Booker T. & The MG's - Hang 'Em High
15. The Human Beinz - Nobody But Me (listen closely to the intro and outro)

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/134-10-10-1968

Originally, this set was ten songs, but it barely clocked in at 30 minutes, so I added five additional tracks to
get the set's length up to 49 minutes.  This nearly became a "'68 strictly instrumental" set based on what
you'll hear.  This is what '68 sounded like (to my ears, anyway)...  Enjoy!

ETA: A corresponding '69 set should be done sometime this week...

10. Nada Surf - Popular (per RGMike)

11. Tom Jones featuring Ruby - Kung Fu Fighting

https://soundcloud.com/capnjack-1/136-10-10-1996

As with the 1997 set, this set was put together through some old requests
and clocks in at under 40 minutes.  Enjoy!

More proof that the 90s don't have to suck. Dug hearing the Nada Surf for the first time in ages; ditto Imperial Teen. And the Fool's Garden was totally new to me, but loved it. Gotta seek them out!
Let's get right to it.

Been meaning to ask, Cap'n -- which CDs of Coke/Pepsi/etc commercials do you have?  They're mostly out-of-print and hard to find.  There was a Coke CD I remember seeing at Tower in the early '90s -- maybe it was a 100th Anniversary thing -- And I was very sorry i didn't buy it then.
