4th visit to 1969:
1. Fairport Convention - Matty Groves
hadn't heard that in many a moon.  Reminds me: I'd like to request some Renaissance for your next '73 or '74 excursions. They were HUGE on NYC prog-FM and you never hear them anymore.

I remember that, and yet when I looked at their discography I didn't recognize any of the song
titles, and only a couple of the album covers.  I guess they didn't click with me.  There was a lot
of prog rock in the early '70s, so it was easy to pass on some groups.

"Ashes Are Burning" was I think the most popular, airplay-wise. They had a song about Russia that got played back-to-back with Al Stewart's "Roads to Moscow" iirc. (speaking of cult artists with loooong literary LP cuts)

Was it "Can You Understand?" (I'm already compiling a '73 set in my head...)

"Mother Russia" ( 9-minute epic) is what i was thinking of; "Ashes..." is 11 mins +. "Carpet of the Sun" was probably their biggest airplay item (shoulda been a hit single) -- I'd go with that.

pass the borscht!  That was terrific.  Al Stewart (pre-Year of the Cat) really needs to be rediscovered.

and that Chicago track, which I think Dave played, like, once, is a delight.

oh, and the Isleys did some of the best R&B covers of "white" hits evah.

Over the weekend I listened to Carpet of the Sun and Ashes Are Burning online and both
rang faint bells.  So they definitely got some airplay on WNEW-FM.  Hearing Annie Haslam's vocals
brought to mind Procol Harum's lovely Fires (Which Burnt Brightly) from the same year.

oh yeah..!

did you know Al Stewart used to hang out with Yoko Ono before she ruined the Beatles ... er, I mean met John Lennon?

At least that what he said when I saw him at the Sausalito Art Festival back in 2009 or so.   Good show, btw.  Just him and another acoustic guitarist.  Very interesting chatter between songs,  he seems like a find conversationalist.

Damn, I'd forgotten what a wonderful song that one is.

and the Young/Nash thing is a true rarity.  I have it on one of the Warner/Reprise "loss leaders", Hard Goods

BVT is one of the great albums. Kind of a mid-70's Sgt. Pepper in its color and diversity.

I view this as two from the same group, as the latter is the Jefferson Airplane in everything but
name.

7. George Harrison - Sue Me, Sue You Blues

Another great "forgotten" song.  Why we don't hear these gems more on the radio is a mystery
to me.  Instead they keep flogging the same "hits."

Agreed.  I regard it as perhaps the best "Jefferson Airplane" album.  Why it has languished in
obscurity, especially in JA's hometown, perplexes me.  As AL was getting deeper into their
catalog, I thought that eventually she would play something from it on 10@10.
