Inspired by Renee's recent set, my 4th visit to 1980:

  2. D.L. Byron - Down In The Boondocks

Produced by Blly Joel!  I liked Mr Byron -- sadyly, he never really broke out of the pack of "next Elvis Costello"s, which was, er, gettin' mighty crowded at that point.

Inspired by "We're All Alone" (and RGMike's requests), a vertical tasting of cover versions of songs from 1970 through 1979:

 1. Frijid Pink - House Of The Rising Sun (1970)
 2. Bobby Womack - Fire And Rain (1971)
 3. Tom Jones - Witch Queen Of New Orleans (1972)
 4. Donny Hathaway - Never My Love (1973)
 5. The 5th Dimension - Soul And Inspiration (1974)
 6. The Hollies - 4th Of July Asbury Park (Sandy) (1975)
 7. Frankie Valli - We're All Alone (1976)
 8. Ronnie Spector & The E Street Band - Say Goodbye To Hollywood (1977)
 9. Blue Öyster Cult - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (1978)
10. Dave Edmunds - Girls Talk (1979)

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/115-10-10-vt-1970s-covers

There's a little cheating on my part.  Dave Edmunds version of "Girls Talk" was the first recorded version, but I included it here since I used Linda Ronstadt's cover in the 1980 set.  And Donny Hathaway's cover of "Never My Love" was recorded in 1973, but wasn't released until Record Store Day 2013.  With that said, enjoy the set!

Inspired by Renee's recent set, my 4th visit to 1980:

  6. Debbie Jacobs - High On Your Love

NTM -- was surprised to see it actually charted (#70) but it got no NYC airplay I guess. A catchy little ditty.

IIRC, it was a #1 on the Billboard Dance/Disco chart.

3. Tom Jones - Witch Queen Of New Orleans (1972)

 5. The 5th Dimension - Soul And Inspiration (1974)

mondegreens aplenty:  Tom Jones changes "zombie voodoo gris-gris" to "zombie voodoo people" and the 5-D change "my heart's inspiration" to "my-y inspiration". I'm sure the songwriters forgive them, since they got paid regardless.

The BOC was NTM -- interesting they covered that one before David Jo.

Inspired by RGMike's request for Robert Palmer's cover of "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming", here is my 4th visit to 1989:

 1. Sweet Baby - There's This Girl
 2. Madonna - Supernatural (this B-side to "Cherish" would make a great Halloween track)
(Bill Hicks on Rick Astley)
 3. Rick Astley - She Wants To Dance With Me
 4. Deborah Harry - I Want That Man
(TV: Rapido - Robert Palmer interview)
 5. Robert Palmer - Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming
(TV: After Hours - Paula Abdul interview)
 6. Paula Abdul - The Way That You Love Me
 7. Roy Orbison - The Comedians
(TV: The Walden Interview - Margaret Thatcher)
 8. Elvis Costello - Tramp The Dirt Down
 9. Samantha Fox - I Wanna Have Some Fun
10. Huey Lewis and The News - It's All Right (live)

Inspired by Renee's recent 1970 (and the seeming lack of enthusiasm for my recent 1989 set), here is my 4th visit to 1971:

 1. Freda Payne - I'm Not Getting Any Better / Suddenly It's Yesterday
 2. Chicago - Loneliness Is Just A Word
(Radio dial: The Rolling Stones "Brown Sugar")
 3. ZZ Top - Brown Sugar
 4. Rod Stewart - Tomorrow Is A Long Time
 5. Neil Diamond - Chelsea Morning
(Radio: WPLJ Howard Smith - John Lennon interview)
 6. Paul and Linda McCartney - Long Haired Lady
(Radio: Scene And Heard David Wigg - John Lennon interview)
 7. John Lennon - I Don't Want To Be A Soldier
 8. Ringo Starr - Early 1970
 9. Carole King - Home Again
10. Marvin Gaye - Right On / Wholy Holy

Track one is in honor of Dave Morey playing the long version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"... Enjoy!

Sorry, it's been a busy week  ;)

Great stuff as always -- the first song was NTM, as was the Madonna B-side.  Most of the rest were faves of mine at the time.

here is my 4th visit to 1971:

Had not heard the Macca and Lennon tracks in decades, probably.  Loved the Rod Stewart Dylan cover and I adore Ms King's "Home Again"

Obscure^2!

I never heard of this group.  I still prefer the original Funky Kings version, but a welcome experience nonetheless.

indeed -- NTM too, as was the Queen track.  Just a delightful set; my adoration for "Ariel" is well-documented. Ditto "Sub-Rosa Subway". And it's amazing that Billy Squier, who gave us so much generic AOR product in the early '80s, was responsible for a power-pop gem like "Who's Your Boyfriend".

This is a day early, but...

In honor of Halloween, it's Hits From Hell, featuring the voices of Dave Morey and Don Pardo.

This set was compiled from selections chosen by one Andy Rush.  Let me explain...

In the late '80s ('87-'89, to be precise), I would listen to the "Wax Museum" on 97.3 KRQR-FM, hosted
by said Andy Rush, which aired on the weekends.  He would play AOR cuts from '64 to '79.  In the middle
of this program, he set aside a few minutes for a feature called "Bad Wax".  He would choose a song
that he disliked (often a record he used to spin as a disc jockey in the '70s).  He would tell a story of
why he chose the song, and halfway through the song, he would "nuke" it (i.e. destroy the record on
air).  For this Hits From Hell, I selected ten records that were aired on "Bad Wax" (which I don't believe
were selected by DM for Hits From Hell).  I'll post the setlist on Halloween, as not to spoil it for you, if you
listen to it now:

Let me know what you think!

ETA: Okay, here is the setlist...

 1. Bob Lind - Elusive Butterfly
 2. Marcia Strassman - The Flower Children
 3. Dawn - Knock Three Times
 4. The Bells - Stay Awhile
 5. Donny Osmond - Go Away Little Girl
 6. Neil Sedaka - Laughter In The Rain
 7. Frankie Valli - My Eyes Adored You
 8. David Soul - Don't Give Up On Us
 9. KC and the Sunshine Band - Keep It Comin' Love
10. Samantha Sang - Emotion

So far, so good: I'm thinking Dave played the TO & Dawn tune at least once (I think he may have done a "career medley" of their hits, like he did for Manilow and Cher). Ditto the Sedaka, David Soul and Frankie Valli. OTOH, "Elusive Butterfly" is one of my favorite songs of all time (the late Scott Muni would've agreed with me). But "Stay Awhile" is truly one of my top 5 HFHs -- a horrid horrid song with horrid horrid vocals.

And I'd forgotten about that "Flower Children" thing -- good gawd. Marcia Strassman, aka Mrs Kotter on Welcome Back Kotter: every nice Jewish boy's dream wife.

Please!  I need the MP3 of the Strassman tune!  I've been looking for that for years for it, but unwilling to buy the whole damn CD I'd seen it on!
